Product Description

The Sport Berkey Portable Water Purifier is the ideal personal protection traveling companion - featuring the IONIC ADSORPTION MICRO FILTRATION SYSTEM. The theory behind this innovation is simple. The bottle's filter is designed to remove and/or dramatically reduce a vast array of health-threatening contaminants from questionable sources of water, including remote lakes and streams, stagnant ponds and water supplies in foreign countries where regulations may be sub-standard at best. This advanced technology was developed, refined and proven through diligent, investigative research and testing performed by water purification specialists, researchers and engineers. The media within the filter element removes contaminants by a surface phenomenon known as "adsorption" which results from the molecular attraction of substances to the surface of the media. As the bottle is pressed, the source water is forced through the filter. The quality and volume of media used, determine the rate of adsorption. The flow rate or time of exposure through the filter has been calculated to yield the greatest volume removal of toxic chemicals caused by pollution from industry and agriculture. This exclusive filter element is impregnated with proprietary "absorbing" media that promotes IONIC "absorption" of pollutants within the micro-porous element, such as aluminum, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, mercury and other dangerous heavy metals. The "Tortuous Path" structure of these pores gives it its unique characteristics. The Sport Berkey Portable Water Purifier offers a convenient and portable filtration system using medical grade technology.

I bought these Berkey Portable Water Purification bottles because I read about Berkey in Countryside Magazine. They are great! No off taste, very high quality. About the only thing I wanted to remove that it doesn't is fluoride. However, the bigger Berkey purifiers do allow you to get an additional filter to get rid of fluoride.

Lightning fast shipping from DecoSpace, the seller. Going back to buy the table top purifier model...which also comes with 3 more of these portable models.

Another Layer of Safety. I travel a lot for business and have often wondered about the quality of water I've encountered. I finally decided to do something about it and bought a three pack Berkey Water Filter Sports Bottles.

I pack one in my backpack and carry it (empty) thru the security checkpoint at the airport. Once on the other side, I fill it 3/4 way and carry it with me. On the plane, I have water readily available and know that it's filtered. While on the flight, I have water at my fingertips and don't have to bother the flight attendant.

At my destination, there have been times that I've been grateful to have a filtered water source. No need to buy expensive bottled water either. I can't tell you how many times my co-workers have looked at me, shook their head and said, "I wish I thought of that!". During a recent trip to a southern state, I was the only one in my group that did not come down with the runs. Was it because of the water bottle? Don't know but I'm going to keep taking it with me just in case!

I've been using one bottle for over 6 months now and it still works. I'm thinking that I should either replace the filter or start using another bottle.

So why only 4 stars? After 6 months of use, it's started to leak a bit when up at altitude. That's why I'm only filling 3/4 of the way. Still very satisfied and will buy again.

While I don't have a lab at my disposal to test the filtration/purification claims, I think it's important to have a few different water purification methods at your disposal. Whether you feel that iodine/chlorine bleach additives are more effective than physical filters...I believe it's a good idea to probably use a combination of methods.

Whether the area you're camping in is more conducive to UV, pasteurization, boiling, or iodine/chlorine bleach water treatments...I think it's a good idea to combine those methods with a physical filtration system. If you're pulling tap water in the US from "the grid" and not a well, it's most likely been treated with Chlorine Bleach already (unless it's post natural disaster / emergency, then assume the water in the tap is contaminated).

These bottles are great in that the filtration is part of the sport top. So, our family gameplan is to pull clear as water as possible (filtered through a cotton bandana or a coffee filter) into one container, treat it chemically, then pour the treated water into these filter bottles for a second layer of "water cleaning" and consume our water from this bottle.

May be overkill, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

This is one of several types of filters I own to be ready for different needs. It worked fine on a resent trip that required flying. I used it for refilling with potable water at the airport and various water fountains. Since we were in the mountains on day hikes, I also knew I was covered in case something happened. Be aware when using, you need to squeeze pretty hard to get the water up through the tube. Because of that I gave it 4 stars. It's hard to empty completely because sucking at the top of the tube doesn't do a lot to aid the flow of water. It excels at taking out parasites/pathogens (Crypto, Guardia, Protozoan Cysts) and also heavy metals and chemicals (most portable filters don't take these out). I'm not aware that it takes out Bacteria (salmonella, cholera, E.coli) so take the time to understand your water sources and purchase filters that take out what you need to take out. I found this is not as easy as you think because not all manufacturers make it easy to compare the main areas of filtering (Bacteria, Parasite/pathogens, Viruses {rare, it seems}, heavy metals and chemicals).

I love knowing I can get clean water anywhere. The flip top is a great design and so easy to use. It does take some sucking action to get the water up through the straw but that is be expected in my opinion as the water is having to go through a pretty good sized filter. I am thinking of ordering more of them in fact.

A great idea, but it just doesn't work well. Here is the reason. It is very, very difficult to suck water through the straw and pressing the bottle to squeeze the water out is tough. It can be done, but with too little water coming out each time. I finally gave up using it. I think it would be much better to get a regular water bottle and use a portable filter (there are many of them on Amazon) to filter the water. That way, you will be able to drink the water as you normally would.

Very simple and easy to use. Some difficulty sucking the water through the straw, but not more than expected. Love the long shelf life, happy to have them in case of emergency. Bought for my mission trip to Guatemala, but ended up having access to bottled water the whole time. After two weeks of using though I found that the straw would get stuck when opening it to drink, but that may have been just an issue with the one. Haven't tried the other two.

definitely recommend. Cheap and easy to use. Bought one at REI before purchasing this one, got one bottle and filter for about $80, filter had less gallon capacity for filtering and it was completely impossible to suck through the straw, returned and bought these.
