There are so many disappointing "thrillers" out there it's refreshing to pick up a novel that actually works. The Berlin Deception has intrigue, espionage, a crafty, persistent antagonist, double crosses and for WW2 geeks, lots of references to actual locales and events. This is essentially a "what if?" thriller that sets the action underneath actual historical events. The writing is clean but not facile, so the prose is far more satisfying than most of the popular authors out there (Grisham, Baldacci, Patterson). I compare this book to Ludlum's opus for that reason -- deep layers of fiction wrapped up in complex sentences. I mention Robert Harris for the obvious connection to Fatherland and his other books set during historic events.

I have only one complaint -- the extreme duress our poor hero goes through made me somewhat exhausted, especially near the end. But this is more than balanced by the wordcraft and fun of the book and the complexity of the characters, especially the female lead. For these reasons, and because it's a first novel by a fresh new voice, I'm rating this book five stars. It's worth a read!

This was the first ebook that I have ever owned and downloaded to my kindle.
I found it was a book that you couldn't put down once you started reading, it took you from one danger point to another with ease.
I am now going to find another book written by the same author, as he has me hooked.

John Becker becomes the hunted after being sent to investigate Hitler's intentions of attacking France. Becker, needless to say, risks his life and everyone he comes in contact with when he goes undercover. It is only through the most dedicated and death defying efforts that he is able to gain the information he was sent to uncover. Now all he has to do is get that information to the allies before it is too late. This is a good read.

Berlin Deception is well written and compelling. Spy thrillers are not my favorite type of book; however, I was curious about this author's first novel. Once I started Berlin Deception I did not want to put it down. The historical setting description and character development are excellent. I look forward to reading Jeff Vanke's next novel.

Well paced and easy to read. Entertaining pre-WWII spy thriller goes by quickly and brings a satisfying but predictable conclusion. Despite the formula approach (with a twist or two, I enjoyed this novel.

This book reads like a James Bond thriller, except more true to life. Becker, the British spy in 1936 Berlin, struggles against many almost impossible odds to succeed in his mission. Great action. The author, Vanke, has a doctorate in European history, and so is also able to present us a chilling account of how people lived at this time in fear under the strong arm of the Gestapo and the SS. We have stories of brutality, intrigue and many narrow escapes... and always the portrayal of daily life in an atmosphere of intimidation. One is thrilled on the one hand, and one shudders on the other.

Geoffrey Vanke takes us to Britain in 1936 where the government is falling over backwards to appease Nazi Germany and only a handful of people led by backbencher Winston Churchill oppose the policy of Peace at all costs.
A British spy named Becker has been “planted” in Germany and we learn through his experiences just how oppressive the Nazi Regime has already become. As the story progresses Becker’s adventures along with an attractive lady companion make James Bond look like Blind Pew. We follow the pair’s attempts to escape with information vital to British Intelligence. The Gestapo are not too far behind in pursuit and foil and counterfoil reign supreme.
A most exciting novel full of surprises and based on all too real historical events. All I can say in conclusion is Thank God Germany did not win WW2 !
