Another major work included here is the baseball fable, Malamud's first novel ,'The Natural'. In this his love for a kind of fantastic realism prevails. I have always found it to be a good book but not as deeply moving as the more Jewish connected novels and stories.
Malamud is a master of care, an artist in the Flaubertian mode.
He does not have the loud clanging vital humor of his two great compeers Bellow and Roth but he stands with them at the heart of the great second half of the twentieth century flowering of Jewish - American Literature.
