Political cartoonist and Kennedy Award winner Ted Rall interviewed Bernie Sanders at length for this book and delved deep into his background to create this one-of-a-kind biography.
Sanders' upbringing in a struggling working-class family in a hardscrabble section of Brooklyn during the 1950s taught him that poverty is a disease, one that affects us all. Incredibly, the lessons he learned back then are revolutionizing the political process this year, marking the resurgence of political progressivism on the left at the same time as the two-party system seems to be on the way out. From McGovern’s 1972 loss to Nixon to the Occupy movement, Rall shows readers exactly how the American public was primed to embrace a socialist calling for a political revolution.
Twice the winner of the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award and a Pulitzer Prize finalist, Rall is a political cartoonist, opinion columnist, graphic novelist and occasional war correspondent whose work has appeared in hundreds of publications, including the New York Times, Washington Post, Village Voice, and Los Angeles Times. He is the illustrator of the full-length comic in Billionaires & Ballot Bandits: How to Steal an Election in 9 Easy Steps, written by Greg Palast, and the author of After We Kill You, We Will Welcome You Back as Honored Guests among many other books. www.tedrall.com

- Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2017I am a fan of Bernie Sanders, and I am hoping that he will run for office in the 2020 presidential election. For that reason, I wanted to learn as much about his life and his political background as I possibly could. "Bernie" is a well designed, "comic book" style presentation of his life history. Ted Rall researched his subject well, and the book is easy to read in one sitting. Well worth the time and the cost to acquire it!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2017You can love and hate Ted Rall at the same time because he will tell you the uncomfortable truth about things you believe. His book about Bernie Sanders is exceptionally good – he first takes you on a tour of the recent (from Nixon to the present) Democratic history and lays a groundwork essential to understanding just how the Democratic party lost it's way and actually became indistinguishable from the Republican party in may ways. With that background, he launches into the rise of Sanders and the Progressive wing of (what's left of) the Democratic party.
The book illustrates the early formative years of Bernie Sanders and Rall shows the different things that formed Sanders politics. The amazing thing is that those politics have remained almost unchanged over the past 50 years. If anything, Bernie Sanders is consistent in his politics.
The book is done with grace and wit (a hilarious panel show a stunned friend of Sanders remarking on his election as mayor of Burlington: “It was like Trotsky had been elected mayor!”)
The book was completed before the primaries got into full swing, so much of the meaty, contentious stuff is missing. I would love to see another book of Rall's take on the election.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2017I enjoyed reading this book after seeing it mentioned on the 52in52 subreddit and I got it. My Finacee, Mother in Law and a few friends have read it and seemed to enjoy it. The only thing is it's very bias to the Democratic party and talks a lot about the bad things that have come about it over the last few years, while bringing in the story of Bernie Sanders. While this will probably be less bough after the election, I still think it's a good read if you want to learn more about him in a fun quick way.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2016Ted Rall takes the boring out of political biographies. I literally fell asleep years ago while trying to read Obama's book, it was just too boring to get through.
Rall, as gifted cartoonist, can reach simpletons in their 50s like myself by basically taking a serious subject matter and making it fun by putting it in cartoon format. There's very little IQ needed, short attention span is okay; I am learning so much as a result. For example, everything I know about Ed Snowden I learned from Rall's Snowden book. Wouldn't know Jack s*** about him otherwise, to be sure.
Now I can cross off Bernie Sanders from my learning list because Rall did such a tremendous job getting all the dull facts together and presenting it the correct way (and least for non-scholarly types such as moi).
Kudos to Mr. Rall for another great graphic book. Can't wait for his next!

- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2016As said above, Bernie in a nutshell. I especially appreciated the concise analysis of the political developments leading up to today's resurgence of progressive ideas. I had learned a lot about the right's tactics to sew up the lower levels of government in order to basically undermine it, and to gain power disproportionate to their strength in society, but I did not have such a clear picture of the Democratic party's abdication. As Ted says at the end, woe to us if the slings and arrows and dirty tricks do derail this movement and plunge another generation into apathy. The clearheaded and brave will soldier on, but many will give up on the political process. Democracy is a fragile creation, and can only survive, as Bernie is showing us, when the ordinary citizen has a fair shake at a decent living. If you like this, I strongly suggest you check out The Smart Bunny's Guide to Debt, Deficit and Austerity, by Arliss Bunny (on Kindle). If more of us understood that higher taxes on big money are not how we pay for things, but rather the way to force money to circulate and be available for all to earn, it might help!

Rall does it again! He produces a graphic book that explores the background of Sanders, and how his politics developed.
I found it to be an informative and engaging book.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2016Easy read, well detailed combined history of Bernie Sanders' life and career, and the evolution of the Democratic Party from the party of the People to its present state of corporatist, third way, neo-liberal, right of center party of the elite.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2018An excellent bio of Bernie -- who is the most trustworthy candidate we have seen in a long time. We need to keep listening to him and use his guidance in the chaotic political process of today. He keeps his eye on the key needs of citizens today. Thank you Ted!.

I love Ted Rall's style even when I (rarely) disagree with him. He is a nearly faultlessly well researched newshound that brings fearless criticism and insightful satire that, for my money, elevates the discussion of politics every time. To see a book written with such affection for Bernie after a career notable for pulling no punches, it makes me think that Bernie may be rare person in politics that is as good as the hype.

A wonderful, wonderful book. The cartoons are GREAT and the political message IMPORTANT. Ted Rall is a treasure. And after you finish this, read Snowden by the same author.
