Editorial Reviews

Review

“Irresistible storytelling . . . Rich and satisfying.” —The New York Times

“McMurtry has reminded us that, in the hands of a maser, entertaining, old-fashioned storytelling rooted firmly in uniquely American experiences and landscape is pretty darn hard to beat.” —The Washington Post Book World

“Few authors match McMurtry’s voice of unsentimental authority when it comes to describing the random brutality and natural hazards that greeted those hardy pioneers who ventured west. . . . [Tasmin is] the best female character in McMurtry’s ever-growing oeuvre since Jacy in The Last Picture Show.” —Chicago Tribune

“Irresistible storytelling . . . The country he portrays is magnificent and violent, with shocking extremes of storm and tranquility. And McMurtry’s exquisite descriptions are written for a single breath, bringing their objects to life with a few well-chosen words . . . Rich and satisfying.” —The New York Times

“An old-fashioned, ripping good yarn . . . A wistful elegy for a lost way of life, and an exploration of the choice to be made between the English life with its order and pattern, or the frontier life with its vast beauty and frequent danger.” —Seattle Times

“Aficionados of Western fiction know that in the work of Larry McMurtry they will find not only first-rate story-telling but also authenticity and a sure mastery of the history and habits of the Old West. . . . In The Berrybender Narratives, he has created an utterly original epic of the Frontier.” —Richmond Times Dispatch

I have read many of McMurtry's books. This group of books made for interesting reading. I don't consider it to be the best books from McMurtry but still well worth reading. The books are a mixture of adventure, romance, comedy and early western hardships. This is a story of a wealthy dysfunctional English family touring the west with an entourage of servants and amenities they were accustomed to back in England. It seems that these books are best when read as a series rather than individually.

Ever since reading and seeing Lonesome Dove, I have ordered every McMurtry novel as they were published. Although The Berrybender Narratives is a bit too long,it still has the perfect McMurtry blend of western American history, suspense, love and not too much violence.

McMurtry's brilliance is displayed in this wonderful four book saga of an unconquered west. His characters are full bodied and his storytelling abilities shine as bright as they did in the Lonesome Dove series.

What more can you say... Larry McMurtry is a modern day master. His work is amazing. The way he can capture you inside of his writing is just breathtaking. I have been a fan of his work since Zeke and Ned. The Berrybender family is the historic version fo the Kardashians! lol I read the series initially when it first came out book by book. This compiled version was beautifully put together and loses nothing in this version. If you are a fan of McMurtry, you have to read this saga.

If you liked Lonesome Dove, you should like this book. It took me a little time to get into the story but I did enjoy it. I read this series of books some time ago and purchased this book because it contained all of the books in the saga. The re-read was just as enjoyable. Recommended to McMurtry fans.

Interesting characters, but repetitious and downright boring in parts, but you learn what parts to skip over after a while. The most irritating is the editing. The worst I have ever experienced. Almost unreadable

I have been a fan of McMurtry's work for many years. The Berrybender series looked interesting, but I should have put it down after the first book. The author stretches out what could have been an average short story into a real boot dragger.
