Top customer reviews
In "Beside Two Rivers" we find the daughter of the first star-crossed lovers of "Before the Scarlet Dawn" grown up in America and wondering what happened to a father who abandoned her as a young child to his brother and family. As far as she knows, her mother is dead, and she has no way of knowing if her father is, too. Darcy is a strong willed and strong minded young woman who gains the attentions of a dashing young man from England who visits to find horse stock. They fall in love and off goes the book!
This is not a sappy romance novel, rather the romance is beautifully and well-defined within the historical novel. Darcy's story helps round out the story of her parents who I came to love in the first book in this series. A story of redemption and forgiveness, this is told from the perspective of a child whose heart might have hardened in being injured and rejected, but whose faith and love caused her to rise above it.
Rita Gerlach's characters are so loveable and fully developed that they linger in the heart and mind long after her books are read. I've never forgotten Eliza, the main character of "Before the Scarlet Dawn," nor had I forgotten and stopped worrying about what happened to Darcy! I can't wait to read the next book in this wonderful series....which I'm going to do right away. I'll be reviewing "Beyond the Valley" asap!
These books are available in paperback or ebook. Please do yourself a favor and get the whole series. You won't want to stop after the first book. I can guarantee that much!
If you like love, romance & history, you'll love Rita's writing here. From the moment the main character and her love interest met, I knew I was in for a ride. The story flowed well, the characters were interesting and the plot and theme were characteristic. Initially, I was reminded of a few scenes in Pride & Prejudice and thought much of it was reminiscent. However, after reading further, I saw Mrs. Gerlach pave her own way and set the stage for a flavor all her own. To that I say, "Good job!" I'd be interested in reading more of her work! As a matter of fact, I figured there had to be a prequel, so now, I look to get my hands on Scarlet Dawn (I think that's the name of it) :)!
Set in 1797, the story is about Darcy Morgan, daughter of Hayward and Eliza Morgan. Being raised by her aunt and uncle in Maryland, she is naturally curious of her parents but there are so many unanswered questions regarding them. Well, that is until an Englishman, Mr. Ethan Brennan, comes to Maryland. He knows her family's secrets and quickly falls in love after rescuing her.
She is soon called away to England by her grandmother. While in England, she keeps encountering a mysterious man walking the estate and the owner of Havendale who tries to keep Ethan away.
Inspirational message of repentance of past sins and forgiveness.
The book could have been more emotional specially when it came to tying the first and second book together and re-establishing former relationships. I know I am being vague I just don't want to spoil the book. I personally enjoy a longer and more developed romance as well. These are my reasons for 4 star rating
I look forward to Book 3, Beyond the Valley!
