Too many of the selections seem uninspired and there are too many pieces that are so lackluster that I have to conclude that the reputation of the author was the main motivation for their inclusion in the collection. I also disliked the small essays between pieces -- they didn't illuminate, they just seemed condescending.
Maybe it was just a bad year for comics (I don't know though, I certainly read a lot of great stuff outside of this collection over the year), maybe my taste just doesn't mesh with the guest editor.
