Editorial Reviews

this group could groove on par with any group from back in the day.the songs have feeling and plenty of emotion about them.while maintaing an ear for radio they also injected there own brand of style to each release.and considering they had a second life after a fatal plane crash killed the original barkays and the great Ottis redding one Barkay survived. so able to re group and come back even stronger is a true statement about them.this group always delivered the funk and this set is testiment to that.

Shake your Rump to the Funk! Plenty o' funk here; plenty o' just dance tunes, too. But if you like the Bar-Kays, you can't go wrong. If you like funk and aren't sure, check it out: Holy Ghost, Shake your Rump to the Funk, Too Hot to Stop (clearly influenced by EWF's Shining Star), and even Move Your Boogie Body, which, while easy to classify as a dance tune, has an undeniably funky bass groove and some serious funk vocals. You will definitely thank Dr. Funkenstein for the RX.

The Bar-Kay's are one of my favorite hometown groups. It's no way that anyone can hear their music and not want to hit the dance floor. They have shown time and time again that they can last with whatever changes that may occur within the music industry. Their unique sound is untouchable whether it's a slow jam or dance track. I love them and it's a must collector cd.

I am going to try to make what could be confusing to some potential buyers a little easier. If you like the Bar-Kays more synth driven and more commercial sounding music, then this is a good collection to choose. If, however, you are like me you will much prefer their insanely awesome, a bit more raw sounding, and I would argue more soulful funk mix that is the other best of collection with the purple cover with the lightening bolt with the word VOLT (which is the name of the record label I believe).

A wonderful compilation of funk music from one of the best bands in being The Bar Kays. Songs like Too Hot To Stop & Move Your Boogie Body are done beautifully on this being Volume 1 of a 2 best of series. They are truly one of the Funk Kings in this fabulous genre of music. I gave this cd 5 stars because of it's mixed flavor & it starts off with one of their older tunes then following each track with newer music. The recording is extremely brilliant no flaws, a must for the Funk fan.

This cd brings back the usual great musical memories. But what it does not share with current CD's is that there are no printed lyrics!
If anyone has the printed lyrics (especially for track 7) send em to xxrhinoxx@hotmail.com.
Thanks in advance to all and enjoy!

THE BAR-KAYS-THE BEST OF THE BAR-KAYS: Rising from the ashes of the same plane crash that killed OTIS REDDING, STAX RECORDS ensemble THE BAR-KAYS regrouped around surviving members BEN CAULEY and JAMES ALEXANDER, morphing into a snarling urban funk outfit far removed from their more mostly instrumental SOUL FINGER beginnings. SHAKE YOUR RUMP TO THE FUNK, their biggest pop hit under the new regime boasted a staggering bass line, leering vocals, hot horns, and a nasty vibe that found favor with disco fans, even though their revamped sound was closer to GEORGE CLINTON's PARLIAMENT/FUNKADELIC than KC & THE SUNSHINE BAND. Follow-ups included titillating titles like TOO HOT TA STOP, MOVE YOUR BOOGIE BODY and FREAKSHOW ON THE DANCE FLOOR, which kept them on the RNB charts, even though they seldom broke new ground artistically. In a mid seventies arena where funk acts were as plentiful as platform footwear, few threw down harder, heavier or hornier than the mighty, groove-humpin' BAR-KAYS.

RATING: FOUR BARS

The Bar Kays were first the house band at Stax, along with Booker T and the MGs, and put out one masterpiece album for Atco in 1967 called Soul Finger, the title track being one of the most instantly recognizable soul tracks, ever.

A lot of this band was soon killed in the same plane crash that killed Otis Redding, also in 1967. But the Bar-Kays retooled their band after this and into the 1970s, pursued a contemporary funk sound.

This collection contains a good slice of material and is composed of groove oriented Southern 1970s funk. This music is pretty stripped, with all the fantastic pops and grooves of the eras best funk.

If you like Stax or know the great Soul Finger album, erase this from mind. Other than name, you would never know this as the same band--two completely different eras, two completely different strains of funk. In the 1970s,. the Meters sounded more like the original Bar Kays than this band did.

Which means that you should get both bands and both eras. Start with this,.
