The next year he saw him in Liverpool with The Band and it was even better, even though some people were stomping out in disgust. Spencer tells the remarkable stories of these concerts in Bob Dylan: Outlaw Blues. This is a comprehensive biography of Bob Dylan and Spencer has spoken to over 300 musicians for the book.

Spencer was born and still lives in Liverpool, England, and is an acknowledged authority on the Beatles. He has been broadcasting his weekly show, On The Beat, on BBC Radio Merseyside for 35 years and, over that time, has conducted more interviews about the band - all captured on tape - than anyone in the world.

Spencer has written over 30 books including biographies of Lonnie Donegan, Billy Fury, Buddy Holly, the Merseysippi Jazz Band, Elvis Presley, Simon and Garfunkel, and Frank Sinatra. He is an Honoured Friend at Sir Paul McCartney's Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts (LIPA)and he has a Gold Badge of Merit from the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters.

He wrote a Kindle during the lockdown, Could This Be Magic? The Story Of Doo-Wop, a book he had wanted to complete for sometime.

Having grown up with the Beatles and had a life-long passion for rock music and its history, I have always been fascinated by the sacking of Pete Best as a classical "what if" story. Clearly he was a decent chap who was screwed by his partners just at the cusp of their huge, historic, and lucrative success. This is a comprehensive analysis of every speculative cause of the firing. It is enjoyable reading primarily for Beatles aficionados. Unevenly written, it is best for those with a British-centric understanding of the numerous minor characters and local bands of the era. Note that this is an updated 2015 revision of the late-1990s original edition.

If you like reading about Beatle related stories Best of the Beatles: The Sacking of Pete Best won't be a complete waste of time for you, however there is really nothing in this book that an avid Beatles fan has not already read or heard elsewhere. Also, there was really no conclusion as to why Pete Best was let go, the author let the reader make up his or her own mind on that matter. It is a good refresher course in some early Beatle trivia and tells the reader some of what Pete Best did and is doing following the "sacking".

I thoroughly enjoyed this book it's an easy read. The drawback is the subject has been covered many times and I know much of it. A while back Paul McCartney was interviewed on the Howard Stern show and was asked about The Pete Best sacking. Paul said when he and the other Beatles heard Ringo drumming they were extremely impressed. Paul described Ringo as "a powerhouse." I believe Pete was let go beckause the Beatles rated Riingo as the superior drummer. Other factors may have come into play, but jealousy over Pete's looks was not one them , in my opinion.

I understand the author is a local radio presenter and to be frank he writes like one. That's not a wholly negative thing though as his glib asides do lighten the tone - he's more of a raconteur than a meticulous chronicler in the Lewisohn mould and I bet he's good company. However, as he's not the best organiser of facts and there are a lot of actors on the stage, as it were, it does get difficult, just here and there, to follow 100% who is who. What makes the book is his closeness to the subject matter and personal knowledge of Liverpool during the Merseybeat era and personal contact over the years with many of those involved. The book was originally published before the Internet provided us with Beatles facts on tap and that should be borne in mind.

In summary I've read many versions of the Beatles story over the years and I did feel that reading this was well worth while.
