The New York Times calls Bloodroot "legendary" and Vegetarian Times has listed it as one of the ten best vegetarian restaurants in the nation. Bloodroot is a wonderfully unique restaurant/bookstore tucked away on the same residential street since 1977, in a Bridgeport Connecticut neighborhood with great views of the Long Island Sound. Now everyone can taste the legend with The Best of Bloodroot--two juicy cookbooks filled with time-tested recipes, gorgeous photographs, and fiery essays detailing the authors' cooking and living philosophies. A thorough glossary includes discussion of the ethnic ingredients on which Bloodroot relies. Personal essays describe the owners' experiences with feminism in a changing world as well as discussions of work ethics, community, economic success, and of course, an examination of the political and moral aspects of vegetarianism and veganism.Volume One opens up a world of exquisite tastes available from well-polish

I wanted a good basic vegetarian cookbook - a back to basics - with the flavor of the original surge of interest, rebellion, and change that exemplified the historical roots of the early days of the movement. I didn't realize that this would turn out to be the actual historical record of the moment in America when we awakened to the horror of our commercial food supply, and the need to live and eat in a very different way. It is fascinating on many levels - the purity and simplicity of the food, the enlightening stories of those who broke new ground, and the way in which food became synonymous with a new freedom of living that embraced a new and enlightened social and political agenda. One of my treasures.

I hated this book! The recipes are taken from other sources. I made several and all were unappetizing, dull, and lack character. Even my cat wouldn't touch my dishes, he is finicky about everything too. Tree bark tastes better than most of these recipes. I can't figure out why Selma's restaurant still exists, I guess it's filled with people with no taste buds.

i have been lucky enough to eat at Bloodroot many years ago with my daughter who is an avid fan of Bloodroot and has been a vegetarian for many years. She also brings her daughter when she is in town. The recipes are wonderful and easy to follow. There should be more restaurants like this but I have found that they are hard to find everywhere except for Hawaii.

I love to cook and this is one of the few cookbooks that I own that I keep going back to. The recipes are mostly easy, some are moderate, but all of them creative and unique. This is a truly whole foods cookbook with creative salads, entrees and amazing desserts. I love their desserts because they are on the wholesome side, yet delicious. Although I am vegan, Volume one is worth buying because it has great cooking tips and techniques. Many of the recipes can be altered to become vegan. I highly recommend both books! If you are ever in Bridgeport, CT, their restaurant is like a mini-vacation overlooking Long Island Sound and the food is fantastic. We drive up from New York City many times a year just for brunch!

I just ate at the restaurant for the first time two nights ago. It was a really terrific meal, very simple and not extraordinarily creative but delicious, hearty and definitely organic. On the way out I was tempted to buy one of their books if only to get the recipe for the Brown Rice Pudding which was fantastic. This cookbook offers great recipes for both simple and more elegant dishes. Certainly worth buying.
