Perspective on Health Care and Big Data

It's the least dry book you can read on the health care system in American. I know that everyone is stating bad things about how the VA is run, but this book is not on the running of the VA, but how record keep and data mining has help the VA keep track of issue and quickly resolved them.

For example, I now understand how the VA quickly found out which Chemo/Radiation physician was over dosing patient after a pattern of deaths and radiation poisonings were found in the Philadelphia VA facilities. I also now understand how they were able to get a list of VA hospitals that had schedule issues and which ones showed possible deaths based on that so quickly. Yes a week and a half is quick for such a huge hospital system.

It gives you perspective on proper use of "BIG DATA" especially when all you hear about is privacy concerns and scares.

Must Read if interested in health care

This is a masterful explanation as to how the US is missing out on the solution to our major problem, health care. Rather than worrying about insurance the book deals with the excellence of the VA system and why it is much better than other health systems. The downside is that reading the book will make most uncomfortable since we are victims of a poor system an we have very little chance of improvement. Our leaders are not leaders but political animals that have an agenda that does not lead to a better life for most of us.

Reading this book will give you a chance to exercise you ability to convince others without information that their prejudices are just plain wrong.

Managing to lower the cost and simultaneously increase the quality of care. At the core of this success, is VistA, the Electronic Health Records system developed at the VA, and now available as Open Source software.

This book should be required reading for every US citizen, especially members of the US Congress. I am alive today, only because of the Veterans Health Service. Phillip Longman presents a factual description and discussion of the VHS and the health care it provides. I, for one, couldn't put this book down, once starting to read, until finishing a splendidly written book.
