I will start out by saying that this one can be read as a standalone. When I read numbers 3 & 4, I felt they had to be read in order for the setup in number 4 to be completely understood. Best Chance does not require reading of the first 5 in the More Than Friends series.
Now, to be more specific of my review of Best Chance. I loved Vinnie and Chance. No simpler way to say it, they were likeable and very much the “guy next door” kind of people. As with so many stories out there, so much could have been avoided with a simple act of communication, but then where would the fun be in that? Generally, supporting characters don’t steal the show but I have to say Vinnie’s friend and business partner, Maggie, does just that. She completely owns every scene she’s in, no matter how minor a part she may play in that moment, it’s all her.
Sometimes, in short stories/novellas the relationships can feel a bit rushed but not this time. Would it be a better story if it was longer so that Vinnie and Chance’s connection could be explored more fully? Sure, but this time it’s not a necessity since we get to see snippets of the summer they spent together in high school to help us realize that this isn’t a love at first sight kind of pairing.
I’d like to add that the “explicit heat level” to me is borderline. When I think of explicit in those terms I often think of terms of quantity. There really isn’t a lot of sex in Best Chance, but what there is, is definitely “fanning yourself” kind of hot. Having said that, it sounds like it’s more porn than storytelling but that is just not what Aria Grace gives us. The sex is as beautifully and tastefully written as the rest of the story.

Vinnie is a bartender. Vinnie isn't looking for a relationship, but when his old high school classmate, Chance walks into Ray's bar where Vinnie works, will he "let his chance pass him by"?
I really enjoyed this book. I haven't read all the books in this series, but of the ones I have read, this was by far my favorite.
Vinnie and Chance had a great chemistry. I love when an author can make me feel, and Aria made me feel the love and passion Chance and Vinnie share. I felt the sweetness of the relationship between Chance and his son Cater.
I devoured this book in a few hours. I couldn't put it down. It has just the right amount of Love, Passion, sweetness, and even a little angst and heartache thrown in. It was just a really well balanced book. It was well written. I loved getting both Vinnie and Chance's POV's. It was a well paced book.
My one complaint, it ended, and I didn't want it to end. :( I wanted to keep reading about Vinnie, Chance and Carter. I highly recommend this book!!
I've liked all the books in this series and this was no exception.
Chance and Vinnie were in high school together and they were each others first when it came to hand and blow jobs. However, when they went back to school, Chance took up with a girl whom he later married and left Vinnie.
Fast forward 10 years. Vinnie is a bar tender at a local bar and Chance is a part owner of a gym. One night Chance walks into the bar by accident and reconnects with Vinnie.
One morning, the conversation turns to kids, with Vinnie saying the doesn't want kids. That's a problem because Chance has a 15 month old boy. Upset he leaves.
This book does suffer from miscommunication between the 2 MCs. A bit of angst until Vinnie accidenta
This is a charming story of two men who had a relationship in high school meeting up more than ten years later.
Vinnie is a slightly directionless red-headed bar tender. In his late twenties, he hasn’t ever made any serious commitments or had a long-term relationship.
Chance is a single father. He is building his own business while caring for a young son. After a long hetero marriage he is finally ready to be honest about the fact he is gay.
Back in school the men fooled around for a summer. They never talked about their feelings and the relationship ended when they went back to school.
When Chance walks into Vinnie’s bar and the men meet for the first time since school, things are more than a little bit complicated between them.
This short story is tender and nuanced. It is told alternately from Chase and Vinnie’s perspectives. The dual narrative allows Grace to sensitively explore both men’s memories, feelings and insecurities.
An excellent short story - I just wish Grace had written this as a full novel!
