My dilemma: I unscrewed a grease fitting out of the top of the shaft on the spindle on my lawn mower deck. Like a moron, I pounded the shaft out of the spindle like a maniac, ruining the threads all throughout. Awesome! These spindles are not made out of cheap/soft material. And because I will likely repeat my stupidity again down the road, I liked how many different fittings this had. In my case, I needed to repair threads on a 3/8 fine (24) hole/nut.
Because I have never used a tap & die set before, I watched a couple of YouTube videos. There's really nothing to it - you just line up your tool (make sure it's straight), go slow...screw in about 1/2-1 turn, then unscrew to break up the metal. And in about 2 minutes, I had new threads. It was really simple. And this set performed perfectly.
Even the cheap set at Harbor Freight is $16, and based on the reviews, you're really risking quality. So for an extra few bucks, you get this set, and I can vouch for it being worth the money.
I just sheared off one of the taps right at the top of the bore hole on a classic car door sill. This was the third of eight holes I was creating. Now I have who knows how long or what I'll do to try to extract the ruined tap. Then, once that's done I'm going to have a mess trying to get the rocker panel repaired and re-tap with a quality tool.
If you need to do anything on any scale, or any volume, this IS NOT the set for you (or me).
After buying what I thought was the best in the business, a Greenlee, I had the same issue. So I started to question myself instead of the tool. Two things, first I was putting lateral torque on the taps which caused them to snap in half, my fault; second I began reading other people's experience nd realize that after drilling the bore hole, I neded to make sure I had machine oil on both the tap and the hole to assist in cutting the grooves.
Once I rectified my mistakes, the process went smoothly, quickly and most importantly, successfully.
This review has been updated to reflect the great customer service from Efficere Tools, who contacted me to let me know they refunded the purchase price of the tap & die set. So while I can't give the set a full 5 stars for the reasons listed above, they definitely earned 4 for the good customer service. I'd be happy to buy from them again. And as I said above, the dies themselves were fine and a great deal, just plan to spend a little extra on a sturdy wrench to use them on steel.
I just purchased the TAP and DIE set. I had a riveted bolt on the sending unit of my diesel tank break off, this worked PERFECT! I followed the counsel of other reviews and used cutting lubricant, and would do a turn or two, back it out, clean it, and then repeated that procedure until I had the new hole tapped. For a “VALUE” product, I feel like this kit will work well for periodic projects around the house if I continue to use it as directed. Some of the bottom threads did wear down slightly, but considering the quality of steel I was tapping this was reasonable. I would buy this again considering that each tap or die used properly should get at least 5 solid uses, and compared to the cost of other big name kits or having a machinist do it for you, this is a great deal!
