The gold finish is certainly just spray paint over a black (presumably spray painted) finished screen. It was obvious because the mesh parts only had gold paint on them along where the solid metal parts were sprayed, and the centers were still black. It looked absolutely terrible. (Sorry forgot to take a before pic)
I drilled out the missing hole without issue.
I used a cutoff wheel on an angle grinder and cut 3.75” off of the rear feet on each side (about half of their length). It’s still very stable and sits much closer (see pics).
I got some brass finish spray paint, taped off all the solid metal parts, and resprayed the front of the mesh to make a consistent finish.
After this, it looks much much better and I’m still into it for less than 1/3 of the cost of similar “nicer” brass finished fireplace screens.
