Load was less than 100lbs, the product says it is rated to 500lbs.
Pictures included of the break on the carrier.
First off, the bottom plate that holds the basket level while prior to inserting the pin is junk pot metal with a very weak weld. The first time I lowered the basket, the weight of the basket itself broke the welds on the bottom plate causing the rear edge of the basket to hit the ground. Thankfully my feet weren't under it at the time. I have the main bracket at a welders shop now to get a steel bottom plate welded onto it where the junky one broke off.
The next problem is that the basket sags even when you have well under the 500 lbs of weight on it. The pin should be enough to hold it but I guess there is some slop somewhere that is causing the sag. We drove 2000 miles with it sagging a bit and didn't have any problems though. I am hoping that the steel bottom plate I am having welded on (described above) will help prevent the sag.
Lastly, all of the hardware and multiple parts of the basket and frame started to rust after a single trip. Some of the rusting areas on the bottom did rub on the ground when going up a steep dirt and rock path in the mountains (see comments on basket sagging above). So I accept that the protective coating got rubbed off in those areas and exposed them to the elements. That's ok. But the hardware and other areas that didn't rub the ground should be better protected or be a better steel to prevent rust. The very nature of this product requires that it be out in the elements so the manufacturer shouldn't have used less quality materials.
Overall, this product is ok. I am not sure if there are better products out there for a slightly higher cost. You may want to swap out all the hardware with stainless steel when you're assembling it. You'll definitely want to have a steel plate welded onto the bottom of the main bracket / hitch bar.
The instructions were poorly done, but it was pretty simple to figure out. The box lacked any packing material which caused some minor damage due to the parts banging into each other. The left basket and right basket were cable tied together creating a "clam shell". The other parts were contained within the "shell". Wrapping the loos parts with cardboard would have helped. Tying them to the basket would also help.
3 Stars for the product but 1 Star for the company that packaged the unit. 5 Stars for Amazon's Customer Service.
