This is one case when I wish I'd been wrong, but Her Best Friend Jon turned out to be the hardest book I've ever written. There were times I would have liked to find a way to make Jon materialize in front of me so I could give him a piece of my mind, but then came the day I finally typed the last sentence.
Usually when that happens, I feel a little sad. The story I've poured my heart into for months has reached its end, and it's time to say goodbye. But this time I felt like Rocky Balboa must have when he ran to the top of those steps without stopping. I also thought about doing a victory dance. Not because I was glad to see the end of Jon, but because as writing challenges go, this was one of the toughest...and it felt good to know that instead of giving up and putting out an inferior story, I dug my heels in and gave it my best effort. And if early reactions are anything to go by, it was worth it.
Now I'm just crossing my fingers and hoping Cal is a little kinder to me as I begin to tell his story.
