In between, listeners will find the essential tracks that made the band such a cultural phenomenon, including such fan favorites as St. Stephen, Casey Jones, Sugar Magnolia, Friend of the Devil, Scarlet Begonias, and Hell In a Bucket.

I just HAD to have this set. I am not a Dead Head. Nor am I a “casual fan” of some of their hits. If you fall into similar category, this is the set for you. I had four Grateful Dead albums in my original vinyl collection: AMERICAN BEAUTY, of course The Album to own of theirs; then WHAT A LONG STRANGE TRIP IT’S BEEN a double LP, the best compilation album they took an active hand in releasing, a solid collection of what The Dead considered to be their best studio and live material; TERRAPIN STATION, a progressive rock turning point for the band and what I consider to be their best overall sounding album ever; and finally the oft-maligned SHAKEDOWN STREET, somewhat of an (at the time) urban R&B influenced adventure. These four albums covered all of the styles of the two decades of original GD material and were all that was needed for a cross-genre loving something-more-than-casual fan.

This new double disc, and for the umpteenth time entitled “The Best Of..” release is perfect for one such as me. It is arranged conveniently in chronological order, covers almost the entire Great Garcia period over multiple labels (thank you Rhino), and hallelujah! It has the entire Terrapin Station suite, unedited and unabridged. The engineering/mastering is superb! Pristine! Immaculate! If only WEA could have come up with a less used titled.

Now you can ride along with Captain Trips on his long strange journey from acid folk-rock tales through San Francisco laid-back acoustical Americana, through non-traditional experimental jazz-rock-improvisations, through art-rock/prog-rock symphonics, through Lowell George’s Little Feat influenced R&B, and on into the 80’s culminating in modernized but soft around the edges arena rock messages and anthems like Throwing Stones.

Even if you are a certified Dead Head who owns all or most of the studio releases-get this album! Why? Well the sound quality on this new compilation just absolutely trounces all the earlier releases-even the big box releases of all the studio albums done a few years ago. There will be endless debate on exactly which titles are the best but so what. These are all solid selections. If you are new to the band and wonder what the fuss is all about-this ain't a bad place to start. And you know that despite all the babble about the Dead's studio albums not cutting it-the proof is in the hearing. They were good to excellent in the studio and here is some of the proof of that. To their everlasting credit they, unlike many bands, were able to successfully surpass their studio efforts with amazingly brilliant live tour-de-force monumental live performances. There are no live tracks on this release but use this as a jumping off point and start exploring the long strange trip. If you are an old fan you have here a pretty solid collection of cuts over their entire studio career in the Best Sound you have ever heard for these tracks! Happy 50th.

WOW, what a great compilation of some of The Grateful Dead's tunes! For longtime fans of the band, this will take you back to their beginnings, and through their great career as one of the best rock bands ever. For new fans or the musically curious, this is a great intro to them. The remastering job is absolutely PHENOMENAL, with dynamic range and detail that is as good as the best recorded and mastered discs I have in my collection of over 3,000 CD's! On a decent stereo system, you will hear nuances and detail like you've never heard before! Mega-kudos to the RHINO remastering engineers and team!

I previously reviewed "The Dead's" last "Greatest Hit" or "Best Of" collection which was a 17 track compilation. This one adds a disc of numbers to 32! & this one is 2 bucks more on the average! Now mind you if you buy the previous "Best Of" collection you get a compilation covering the bands career but this one far exceeds that one. The sound on the previous collection was great but this one is simply awesome. The selections as we know are great as well but, as most Dead fans know, always a favorite missing somewhere among the masses. Nevertheless, this one is the one to get for now till they put out another set with yet more disc's of music. So in conclusion, get this one, you will not regret it even if you like The Dead & want a broader collection of songs.
Drop by my website sometime @ "JudeMac Forever" & look around. Something there for about everyone.

I ordered this for a memorial service because this music was his favorite. We had a lot of other CDs as well and never opened this one. Too bad because I could see from the song list and description that this was a good mix. I returned it unused but this should not reflect negatively on the music or the seller. This is an excellent album.

I love the Grateful Dead. Always have always will. I have many cassette (and DAT) tapes of the boys but wanted to have some good studio quality music for listening to on my bluetooth player. I am always a bit leery of the studio albums because some of the magic is lost when it is so polished. However, this album (just showed my age) is a great mix of the songs we all love, and enough of the concert experience to relish the “good ole days”. This compilation does a great job at choosing some of the best songs, and the best versions. I have put it on random so I am always excited to hear (and guess) what the next song will be. With the Dead it was always fun to be at a show and hear the first couple notes and know what was about to be played. I miss those days. However sitting in the garden pulling weeds, and giving love to my plants, while the Dead are playing in the background, life is pretty darn good. This is the first full album I have bought in years. Seems so much cheaper to pick and choose the singles that you want the most, and download those. There is not a song on this album that I do not enjoy completely.

Sure miss the boys, but so glad we are able to enjoy their music and their style of concert. I will always be Grateful.

Recap: Any Deadhead (I always hated that term) will be happy with this album. It makes me smile, smile, smile.
