In the very early sixties, when I was about twelve, my older sister acted in plays performed at the San Jose Civic Playhouse. In the back of the Playhouse, downstairs, was the "Green Room" - a place where actors and audience members could gather, have coffee and conversation. Sometimes, singers would perform. I'll never forget my fantastic great fortune of hearing Joe and Eddie perform, a duo that absolutely sung to my soul. They harmonized and improvised their tenor and baritone voices like nothing I had ever heard before. I was absolutely mesmerized! Their renditions of "Children Go," and other gospel/folk songs made you want to stand up, clap your hands, and shout. I learned my first guitar chords to their songs. It was exciting so see them grow in popularity, release albums and appear on TV shows such as Danny Kaye and Shindig. Joe's sudden death in a car accident, just at the crest of their fame, was such a devastating loss. Over the years, I've worn out their vinyl LPs, and I've even worn through cassette tapes I made of their recordings. Thanks goodness for the Internet, where more and more of their beautiful recordings can be accessed. I was thrilled to see You Tube videos from the old TV shows. Wow --there they are again, with that powerful energy. From their first album, there are some gorgeous songs, my favorite being Dehlia. It's like an aria. I love to (attempt to) sing along with every word of every song, and even make futile efforts to match a line of their harmony. It's wonderful that this "Best of..." CD is now available. Their versions of Mariah, The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, and Summertime are far better than ANYone else's, but I sure wish more CD's would be made of their incomparable music. They're simply the most incredible singers that could ever grace a song.

Joe and Eddie were a black singing duo in the earl- to mid-60s who clearly destined for stardom. Sadly, Joe Gilbert was killed in a car crash in 1966 and the world lost what could have been. Finding this album was like finding a lost gem, albeit from Amazon UK. Their two-part counterpoint harmony has rarely been equaled. To my knowledge, Eddie Brown is still with us but is now in his 80s. Hearing them together is a blessing.

I was so happy to find this recording off a great song team. Too bad they had such a short run. But a great one.

I heard these songs in the 1960's and loved them, so I bought the CD. After many years I still had the case but lost the CD, so I ordered another one. Now I listen to it in the car. Great songs, Mariah, The Drinking Gourd, Lonesome Traveler, The House of the Rising Sun, and many more. Joe passed away in 1966 in a car accident and they never sang together again.

Joe and Eddie were two African-American folk-singers who Bubbled Under the Billboard Hot 100 (position #101) with 1964s "There's a Meetin' Here Tonight," included here. The original LP and single gave the impression that the song was recorded "live," however this collection proves that to be false. The announcer and audience were dubbed into what was actually a studio recording, as it's presented here. Unfortunately for Joe and Eddie, their minor hit single was overshadowed by an actual "live" recording by The Limelighters on RCA Victor, despite RCA releasing no single by them. Joe and Eddie were a product of their time, and had The Beatles not occupied the bulk of the American top 10 in 1964, Joe and Eddie's single would have broken the Billboard Hot 100. They were good at what they did, and its too bad they weren't more commercially successful.

This is an album that I have Looked for, for over 40 yrs. This duo wasn’t around very long due to an unfortunate traffic accident that caused the death of Joe in 1966. If you love show tunes and revival type tunes you will never hear anything better. Their incredible harmonic voices are the best I have ever heard!!! Just incredible.

The album is one of the wonders of the 60's and many of the songs have practical educational and spiritual benefits.

The song, "Follow the Drinking Gourd" is especially so. Outwardly it is a song written in the time of the underground railroad containing geographic codes for escaping to the northern states. Inwardly, this song cries out for humanity to follow the inner promptings of the heart. Along with the other songs on the album, it calls me to a higher plane. It is the inspiration for the story Dream Focus, found in Still Reflections: Stories of the Heart and in the CD Ocean Dreams.

It makes a wonderful gift.

This superb duo has never received the recognition they deserve, doubtless because of the untimely death of Joe Gilbert in a car accident in 1966, just as their career had started to soar. Their artistry is matchless, their voices blending in thrilling chases with each other to produce exciting, exhilarating duets. This collection is a tour de force.

not so well known, but very good music from the folk music 60's. A mix of hootennany and black vocal music.
