In the very early sixties, when I was about twelve, my older sister acted in plays performed at the San Jose Civic Playhouse. In the back of the Playhouse, downstairs, was the "Green Room" - a place where actors and audience members could gather, have coffee and conversation. Sometimes, singers would perform. I'll never forget my fantastic great fortune of hearing Joe and Eddie perform, a duo that absolutely sung to my soul. They harmonized and improvised their tenor and baritone voices like nothing I had ever heard before. I was absolutely mesmerized! Their renditions of "Children Go," and other gospel/folk songs made you want to stand up, clap your hands, and shout. I learned my first guitar chords to their songs. It was exciting so see them grow in popularity, release albums and appear on TV shows such as Danny Kaye and Shindig. Joe's sudden death in a car accident, just at the crest of their fame, was such a devastating loss. Over the years, I've worn out their vinyl LPs, and I've even worn through cassette tapes I made of their recordings. Thanks goodness for the Internet, where more and more of their beautiful recordings can be accessed. I was thrilled to see You Tube videos from the old TV shows. Wow --there they are again, with that powerful energy. From their first album, there are some gorgeous songs, my favorite being Dehlia. It's like an aria. I love to (attempt to) sing along with every word of every song, and even make futile efforts to match a line of their harmony. It's wonderful that this "Best of..." CD is now available. Their versions of Mariah, The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, and Summertime are far better than ANYone else's, but I sure wish more CD's would be made of their incomparable music. They're simply the most incredible singers that could ever grace a song.
