Review

"What a spectacular thrill-ride this series has been start to finish! ... This is nothing less than one of my favourite reads of the year." - Natasha is a Book Junkie

"I loved that the author outdid herself with this one I absolutely loved every single minute of it and I just couldn't get enough. Looking forward to more of Marc and Lily and more action on the next book." - Crazies R Us Book Blog

"Reading the book was like watching a nonstop action movie. Guns blazing, car crashing, walls crumbling ... And I love that it took me to all the nooks and crannies of dangerous places around Africa. Best Laid Plans is a fast pace, action laden story with sexy as hell characters guaranteed to put you at the edge of your seat from the first page to the very last one." - Warhawke's Vault

"And the People's Choice Award for Favorite Breakout Artist Author goes to Stylo Fantôme. Seriously! Only a little over a year ago she came out of nowhere with a fresh story, and it wasn't a fluke. The awesomeness just keeps coming! Best Laid Plans is not like anything most of us have been reading. It is essentially a romance, but it's actually so much more. Action! Action! Action!" - Fan Girl Moments and My Two Cents

Best Laid Plans is about Lily, a woman who has devoted the last five years of her life toward a single goal, making sacrifices and laying the groundwork to get exactly where she needs to be . . . only to meet the sexy but rough mercenary Marc, who undoes all of those plans in a single day. It forces them together on a race across Africa, which they begin as enemies, but fighting their attraction proves to be more difficult than fighting the people after them.

So, what did I like about this read? Everything. I love strong, tough women, and loveable, unapologetic SOBs. Best Laid Plans has a huge heaping of both. So often in novels, we’re told the heroine is tough, but never shown it, and usually she’s crying and desperate for rescue by the climax. Not in one of Stylo’s books. I fully believe that while Lily may lack some of Marc’s experience and training, she can hold her own opposite this dangerous man. Maybe even best him, if he’s having an off day. ;-)

The set up is great. Lily and Marc know each other from working with the same people. They’ve been friendly, skirting around their mutual attraction for weeks, until the eve before Lily is to set off on her transport job, and our couple decides to hook up. Sparks fly, but they agree one night only. Come morning, they’re sure the other has double-crossed them, setting them off on a struggle for power in the relationship. Watching them yo-yo between lovers to enemies and back again was so deliciously entertaining.

And there’s a moment when both Marc and Lily sense their time together is coming to an end, and it forces them to evaluate how they feel about each other. I absolutely loved this scene. It gave me all the feels!

A Stylo virgin: I’d never read a Stylo Fantome book before this, though she comes highly recommended by my girls on After Dark, so I was interested. When I saw the blurb and the cover for this book, I couldn’t resist. I was concerned with the start and my lack of love for Marc (more on that later), but the writing style is on point, and I love when an author can take me on a ride and make me, kicking and screaming, come to care for her characters.

There’s another book and I’m good with that: I hesitated a smidge when I realized that this was not a standalone, but rather a duo with the second book coming out in December of this year. I’m happy to say that Ms. Fantome has managed to craft a satisfying book that ends on a To Be Continued that didn’t leave me wanting to chuck my kindle. Most serials or multi-book series can drive me bonkers because frankly, they feel incomplete, they aren’t meant to be read on their own and I hate reading half a story. This is NOT the case here. Best Laid Plans doesn’t answer every question but it does have a satisfying payoff to a couple of plot threads, and leaves me wanting more.

Lily is far from a do nothing bitch: Lily has been working for five years to get close to Stankovski, so she can avenge the death of her sister. She’s done anything and everything, short of murder, to position herself to do this. She’s capable and smart, yet imperfect enough to connect with and she saves the day, more than once under crazy tough circumstances. She thrives under pressure and thinks well on her feet, which is just what you need with a story like this.

Excellent action: Hitmen/mercenaries? Kickass heroine? Action spanning a continent with loads of danger and hot sex to boot? Yes please.

Best Laid Plans has a lot going for it: non-stop action, exotic locale, two disparate seemingly polar opposite protagonists, a villain, blowing sh*t up: the works. The cover is great. The blurb is fantastic. In the description, the author declares that if the book were a movie, it's be rated R for violence, language, nudity, and graphic sexual content...sounds great, right?

Yeah. This book really frustrated me from beginning to end. While I think BLP has great potential, it tried too hard to be too many things and the balance of the story--or rather, the lack thereof--really didn't do it for me. It's labeled in different genres from 'dark erotica' to 'romantic suspense' and I think that's the problem in a nutshell. You can have several genres within a novel but where is the anchor? If not solid character development then the action and journey itself. Here, the author attempted both as equal partners or switched between character development and action instead one taking the lead and the other in support. Having two anchors becomes a competition and a garbled plot. If you have one solid genre as your anchor to a story, adding other genres as layers around it is just icing.

To start off with... I'm not the biggest fan of insta-lust-love, which makes the believability of any budding relationship harder to digest and accept. We are also dropped in the middle of a scene from the git-go and while orienting the reader was better than most, it instantly creates a distance that is hard to close. At least, it was for me. The plot was way over the top, but I love stuff like that though there is such a thing as over-saturation of a good thing. The sex scenes were okay, but a bit muddled sometimes. It's third person with alternating POVs between Marc and Lily.
