Editorial Reviews

Based on the bestselling novel by acclaimed author Nicholas Sparks, The Best of Me tells the story of Dawson and Amanda, two former high school sweethearts who find themselves reunited after 20 years apart, when they return to their small town for the funeral of the beloved friend. Their bittersweet reunion reignites the love they've never forgotten, but soon they discover the forces that drove them apart twenty years ago live on, posing even more serious threats today. Spanning decades, this epic love story captures the enduring power of our first true love, and the wrenching choices we face when confronted with elusive second chances.

I enjoy Nicholas Sparks movies, and this was no exception. I always enjoy James Marsden and Michelle Monaghan, and they are so great in this. But actor Luke Bracey who played the young Dawson probably affected me most. Everyone is spot on. What a sweet, deeply felt story. Another great reminder that love is in the simple things. I had not seen the movie in theater and noticed two version were available on Amazon. So I chose the "Tears of Joy Edition" because something told me the original might not have a happy ending. And I'm a sucker for happy endings. Perfect treat for being stuck at home with a sore back. Well done!

I loved the movie, but I was confused at first when I got the DVD. I thought the new ending wasn't included because I checked in the bonus features and couldn't find it. You have to go into SETUP on the Main Menu, then select the "Tears of Joy" edition. You can actually watch the entire movie with the new ending included, not just as a scene separate from the rest of the film. It's very different from the original ending and very nice. You find it the same way on both the Blu Ray and DVD releases. Hope you enjoy!

Contains Spoilers!

To be totally honest I swore off ANYTHING Nicholas Sparks a few years back after reading True Believer. Not to mention watching a few of his movies and nearly always one of the lovers die in a tragic way. So after YEARS, yes many many years, I thought I would watch The Best of Me. HUGE mistake. Like seriously, another lover in the movie dies. And then the person who does it gets away with it?!!!! Geeze talk about ruining my night and making me feel depressed. With The Notebook that was a happy cry, they live a long life TOGETHER, have babies and die together! That was a great book and movie. (I boo hooed like a baby over that one) But after this movie and being totally let down by NS again, I am officially over him, his books and his daggum movies. This is the absolute LAST anything Nicholas Sparks related that I will have anything to do with. Now I am going to watch The Other Woman. No love and no death, revenge instead. Yes that should wipe out this movie from my mind.

The movie is good, but hated the ending. So much for the " New" tears of joy edition". I was expecting an alternative HEA and I felt the advertisements led me to believe just that. That did not happen. It has the same ending I saw in the theater and that was just so wrong! Buyer be ware.

Another Nicholas Sparks tale - and that is why I wanted to see it. From the writer of, "The Notebook", "Nights in Rodanthe", "The Longest Ride", and so many others comes this story. I don't read his books, although do see most of his movies and I like each of them for different reasons. Just as "Safe Haven" was different than "Message in a Bottle", so is this. Director Michael Hoffman adds to the story with an oftentimes great soundtrack (Aaron Zigman) and some very atmospheric scenery (Oliver Stapleton). Is this typical Nicholas Sparks? I venture to say this is quite alike and equally different. Here he takes a look at lost love and the time we spend apart because of one decision which can alter an entire lifetime. This could be the theme of some of his other works also, but not the storyline.

High school sweethearts Amanda (Michelle Monaghan) and Dawson (James Marsden) are being played out as their younger selves at the time through actors, Liana Liberato and Luke Bracey. We jump ahead some twenty years while the resentment has grown in Amanda given her situation and the loneliness in Dawson is now easier to see. Dawson did not fight for her and even pushed her away from him purposely. This time is shown through recollections of the past during their present adult characters. Amanda is stuck in a horrible marriage arrangement with a college age son. Dawson has had an accident and is now living with Tuck (Gerald McRanney) since having no family members on which to rely.

Now 'one' of their closest mutual friends passes away and they must go to help get all of his affairs in order and this then brings them face to face again. He is still in love with her, it has never stopped for him.

I never give 1 star but I am so sick of boy and girl. Boy is poor. Girl is rich. Boy has 'no future' except for fixing cars (which my mechanic.... makes a reeeeaaly good living). In a Nicholas sparks book predict all of these things AND an abusive or over-indulgent parent, rain, dancing for no reason, boy contemplating the sky (except this is done on the Bachelor... a lot!), back woods, and then of course the never ever happy ending. This ending has beaten all others (AND I WAS PROMISED AN ADDITIONAL 18 minute Alternate Endind I never got!!! Booooo !!!!!) So .*** spoiler alertt*** to an already terrible tale... the girl says she loves him, only for her son to get into an accident AND SOO SHOCKINGLY SO DOES THE MAN SHE LOVES... he saves the boys heart with his own - no. Not sacrificially. By chance. And a year later the boy finds the donor...this man she loved is now in her son. How's that for romantic. This is sadly "the big romance film' of the year. How about MY OWN PERSONAL N NIGHTMARE GENRE???? More appropriate. Goodbye to romance and happy endings... I think Nicolas sparks might be Stephen kings alias or ghostwriter for taking our hearts and tearing them to pieces.
