We produce a radio feature [...] that recommends great indie, documentary, and foreign films to rent. Toward this end, we are always looking for recommendations to watch and review. This book had several suggestions that reminded us of films that we loved and wanted to revisit. though the descriptions are short and not particularly insightful, there were several reminders of films that we want to revisit. Not my favorite but it is a cool reference.

While I disagree with Crouse's "guilty pleasures" premise, I couldn't help but be impressed by the scope of his tastes. The book is less about celebrating obscurity (though some choices, such as the 1988 documentary CANE TOADS: AN UNNATURAL HISTORY, are certainly lesser-known) and more about the eclecticism that reflects his sheer love of movies. Crouse draws from a variety of references in discussing his choices, though better copyediting would have boosted his authority at times. (Jodie Foster and Sofia Coppola are referred to as "Jody Foster" and "Sophia Coppola" throughout, for instance.) Nevertheless, I was thrilled that someone else enjoyed some of my favorites (A FACE IN THE CROWD, CHERISH), and I was intrigued by the many films I didn't know.

Unless you are OBSESSED with films, this is more or less a rather boring compendium of movies that you've - according to author Richard Crouse, anyway- probably never seen and likely never will. Props to Crouse for not taking the easy route and simply creating a list of intelligent documentaries and foreign films, though these genres are absolutely represented herein. After reading this collection, I must ask, however: Who hasn't seen "Better Off Dead"? You know, the horrible cult classic, John Cusack '80s flick that proclaims, "I WANT MY TWO DOLLARS!" Also, if you have not seen "Ginger Snaps", you are really missing out on some awesome, B-grade teenage 'horror' schlock.
