l have been making mug cakes using my own mixture. (Combine 2 boxes of chocolate cake mixes with 1 box of angelfood cake mix: Use 3 Tablespoons, and add 2 T water. Microwave for 1 minute.) This allows me to make a small amount of something sweet without wrecking my diet, and gives me a variety of options. Most of the recipes use liquid egg substitute. I haven't made many of them yet, and some I probably will not make. There are a few that are ridiculous - too much effort for such a small finished product. It also has a recipe for chocolate pudding that is too labor-intensive for one cup! Still a neat book though, and priced reasonably.

11/19/15 review: I recently received 3 "mug cake" cookbooks as gifts, including: "Best Mug Cakes Ever: Treat Yourself to Homemade Cake for One in Five Minutes or Less" (Monica Sweeney, papeback, 2014); "Mug Cakes: 100 Speedy Microwave Treats to Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth," (Leslie Bilderback, paperback, 2013); and "5-Minute Mug Cakes: Nearly 100 Yummy Microwave Cakes" (Jennifer Lee, paperback, 2014). Although I have not yet had time to make any of the recipes from these books, I decided to go ahead and submit reviews for each book and include just this first paragraph in each of those reviews. Among the 3 authors just mentioned, only Ms. Lee actually defined a "large mug" as a mug that holds 12 or 16 ounces. The other two authors merely referred to mugs as "large" or "small," which was not very helpful. However, all 3 authors do say that, to avoid an overflow when making mug cakes, simply never fill a mug more than halfway full.

This review is regarding "Best Mug Cakes" by Monica Sweeney. Each of these 5 chapters contains 10 recipes: Sweet and Simple, Chocolate Indulgence, Fruity Sweets, Boozy Bites (recipes include alcohol), and Beyond Cakes. The "Beyond Cakes" chapter contains these non-cake recipes: oatmeal; cheesecake; chocolate chip cookie; sugar cookie; peanut butter cookie; chocolate pudding; berry cobbler; apple pie, French toast; and blueberry muffin. A bonus chapter called "Best Dump Cakes Ever" has recipes for an apple-caramel pecan cake and a peach-gingerbread cake. Most of the recipes call for self-rising flour, but if you have only all-purpose flour on hand, the author tells readers how to make a batch of self-rising flour.Read more ›

This book has the best mug cake recipes yet! I have other mug cakes cookbooks but this one has the best results. My only issue and why I almost only gave it 4 stars is the recipes are a little repetitive. It takes the same ingredients and adds one more ingredient to change the recipe. The results are so good though, I just had to give it 5 stars.

I really think I would enjoy these recipes. The pictures are beautiful and it looks as if the author has been really creative with her recipes. My complaint is with the print. For someone my age, having orange print on a white background makes the recipes very difficult to read. I have just one other cookbook in my collection where someone in charge made the poor decision to go for pale print. I am glad that is a rare choice.

I love this book - I love the idea of fast and small treats. I tried the chocolate chip cookie recipe so far, and it's fantastic, so easy and delicious. I can see myself making every one of these recipes, just give me time! Nice to not have a bunch of leftovers when you want just a little treat one day. Easy instructions, nice pictures, great for baking inspiration.
