I already had some plastic steps so my PomChi could get up on my bed. They were ony4 steps up so she had quite a stretch to get on the bed after I purchased a new thicker mattress. Earlier this year, she lost her eye sight and was afraid to take that first step down because she wasn't sure where it was and she kept falling off the steps.
So, I saw these steps and thought they would be perfect. They are definitely tall enough although a bit on the steep side. They also tend to "rock" as the animal is going up or down. Under most circumstances, that would be okay but is very stressful for a blind dog. She kept falling off the sides and landing on the floor. After a few times of that, I knew I had to do something. I liked the steps but didn't want to risk her getting hurt.
I ended up buying a sheet of lattice, then cutting it to create side rails on the steps. I also put a drop of perfume on both the top and bottom step so she knows exactly where they are and now has no qualms about going up and down as she knows she won't fall off. The lattice sides also helped to stabilize it so the steps do not "rock". To keep the lattice in place, I threaded heavy twine through the lattice, across the back part of the steps and tied it securely in the back of the steps. This allows me to easily remove the lattice when I need to wash the step cover. Overall, I am happy with it and so is my dog.

My 10 pound poodle loves going up the stairs. She is a year and a half old and has never been able to get up on the bed herself. She is about to have knee surgery and that was my purpose for getting these, but feel we will have them long after the surgery because she loves them so much. She hasn’t figured out how to go down them yet because she is a scaredy-cat but she will in time. These steps are very Saturday, firm and lightweight. I could not be more pleased with the material and firmness of them. My 50 lb grandson has jumped on these stairs A LOT and they did not get damaged by his going up and down on them.
