Mostly Good Short Stories

I like reading anthologies, and the price for this one was really good. Strahan puts together a diverse short story collection from the science fiction and fantasy genre. There are 28 short stories and three of them I had read before from another anthology and those three were excellent. There were two short stories I did not finish because they were not very good and couldn’t keep my interest. The rest were either excellent or okay. This is why I would it is mostly good stories. I have read through other anthologies in which every piece of writing is excellent, but not this one.
I did like the diversity and reading some short stories I would not normally because I am unfamiliar with author or just not into that genre such as steam punk. I would recommend this book, but you might skip a few of the stories.

Inspiring, really. After spending recent weeks plodding through anthologies which were compiled by editors who didn’t edit, and perhaps didn’t proofread, I was elated with this collection. Stories were detailed, believable, logically plotted, and humane, but were also written by writers with a mastery of syntax, grammar, punctuation, and diction. And no story appeared to be a patent (blatant) promo for a novel sold by the author as a three-book series. Thank you, editors and authors, for reviving my enjoyment of a genre that has been my favorite for over half a century.

I find it hard to judge this collection on its own merits since it has several stories that already appeared in the other "Best of..." collections published recently, which I therefore had to skip (making me feel that I wasted my money). While a number of the stories are of passable quality, this year doesn't appear to have been the best for either SciFi or Fantasy short stories. Nothing stood out as particularly memorable, and there is a lot of (post-)apocalyptic fiction, which is a sub-genre I personally find rather boring.

About half of this is fantasy/fairy-related short stories, which is as you'd expect from a book about both sci-fi AND fantasy, but I felt that while the sci-fi stories were all excellent, some of the stories about fairies were a bit of a let down. But still, well worth buying and dipping in to.
