"Consistently the best of the annual award volumes in the genre - and this year is the most boundless, reaping "national flash fiction days" across the globe and across time, from small historical fictions to an Akutagawa classic to experiments with every form. A who's who of authors, presses, and journals, Best Small Fictions is the one book you should buy in the genre this year if you could buy only one."
- Robert Shapard, co-editor of Flash Fiction International
"This is an excellent selection of flash fiction from expert practitioners at the top of their game. The works selected here demonstrate the power of this extremely short form, each tiny piece of text leaving an imprint on the reader much bigger than its original size. At times they appear to work together with the others, forming a single constellation of beauty and stillness."
- David Gaffney, author of All the Places I've Ever Lived and Sawn-Off Tales
"Brilliant, incendiary, incandescent, these tiny stories capture worlds both intimate and universal. Give this book to anyone who says flash fiction doesn't go deep. This newest volume of Best Small Fictions demonstrates once and for all that flash fiction writers are the Ginger Rogers of the literary world, accomplishing all that novelists and short story writers do, only backwards and in high heels."
- Kathy Fish, author of Wild Life: Collected Works
"An outstanding collection. From a newly translated piece by Akatugawa, to my mind one of the greatest story writers of all time, to current favorites like Carmen Machado and Jacob Appel - and many others I needed to know and now do - this book has remarkable range. And is proof, if we needed it, that the more compact the force, the more powerful the blow."

BSF 2019 is quite different than its previous editions, primarily due to its size. The previous years contained less stories and I only read the digital editions. I was able to obtain a paperback Advance Reader Copy from the editors this year and was pretty surprised when it arrived. The book is about 8”x10” roughly and has 425 pages in it. The cover art is very cool. The book reminds me of a textbook for a college fiction class. This year Best Small Fictions has been published by Sonder Press.
It’s hard to do a review for an anthology since you just won’t love every story. This collection is no different in that regard, but that is not necessarily the publisher’s fault. I’ve been reading the Best American Short Stories collections since 1994, and even those have stories I love and hate. Even my favorite authors have stories in their collections which I could care less about.
As I said, the most striking thing about this collection is the cover and the size. It is filled with at least 100 stories. What’s great about a flash fiction anthology is that the sheer variety that is inherent in the form. Compile a bunch of flash together in one anthology and you will not be bored. Make the book big and fat, and you have a real winner. This year’s edition is quite striking and full of offerings.
The down side to having such a vast collection of stories and bios in one edition is that the book is really awkward to hold. My hands get tired of holding the book and I find that I can’t keep it from flopping around. The up side is that the variety of stories is just incredible and exciting. I’ve only made it through half the book and, since I’m a slow and ADHD type of reader, I know I need to review the book now before a few years pass when I finally finish it.
Best Small Fictions 2019 is a great collection for the flash enthusiast to have in their library. They’ve raised the bar on collections with this one and I give it 5 stars.
