The Best of Spike Jones [Audio CD] Jones, Spike

Amazon.com

Sure, you'll laugh at the zany sound effects (gunshots, auto horns, and sounds that can only be described as semiflatulent) and delightfully loopy monologues from the great Doodles Weaver (his absurd horse-race call on "The William Tell Overture" is classic). But Jones and his City Slickers display impressive musical chops as well. Just how easy can it be to play "Dance of the Hours" on a cowbell, anyway? "Der Fuehrer's Face" has huge historic interest, but the faux earnestness of the vocal is just as funny today as when it was recorded. An icon of irreverence, Jones turns the bland tunes of the day into infectious outbursts of madcap craziness. --Heidi MacDonald

Musicologist Barry Hansen, better known as radio personality Dr.Demento, has said that Spike Jones was the first novelty artist he remembers hearing as a child-This disc features all the big hits that Spike & his City Slickers had in the 1940's:"Cocktails For Two","William Tell Overture","Laura","Dance Of The Hours"-I'll bet Weird Al Yankovic would cite Spike as one of his influences-Anyway,if you love silly music, this one's right up your alley.

My sister and I used to perform skits for our parents (to the original record) when we were kids and I was so happy when I found this on CD. Very funny if you like the slap stick type of music from the late 40's and early 50's. This is a true classic and very very funny. This is a greatest hits type and every track is awesome. The "My Old Flame" track is worth the price alone!

All of the well-known Jones numbers, BUT! If you don't get Spike's absurdist operatic parody (via hillbilly parody) "Pal-Yat-Chee" (on another disc) you don't yet have everything you need!
Also, for a whole nother dimension of fun, check out the VHS videos from Spike's 1950s TV show!

... I loved them then and I love them now ... I made a video with selections from their album as the musical background. As I recall I posted it on Vimeo for anyone who wants to see it. I received more email responses from that video than I've received from any video in ages. So my dinosaur friends out there still remember Spike and City Slickers. The people who love Spike Jones could care less, but what he's doing is a pure DADA form of the performance arts. Thanks to Amazon restored performances are preserved. "Cocktails for Two" is my favorite from that album.

Spike Jones and the City Slickers were among the most accomplished musicians ever to fall all over the stage. Whatever kind of music you love, from jazz to opera, this insanity will tickle your funny bone. The William Tell overture in Spike Jones'
hands ranks as one of the five funniest skits I've ever heard, Abbott and Costello's `Who's On First?' included... and that is praise of the highest kind. Is good stuff! I also saw the Mickey Katz album here on Amazon. If I remember correctly, Katz was Joel Grey's father, a singer with an insane tenor voice, and an incredibly accomplished clarinet player... along with being a Spike Jones' alumnus. Is also good stuff!

These are 12 classic recordings by Spike Jones and the City Slickers that first appeared on 78 rpm records in the 1940s and transferred to an LP record (vinyl, if you insist) many years later. Still later the collection was transferred to CD. This is one of the rare instances when the LP record sounds noticeably superior to the CD release being reviewed here and for one simple reason. It was a practice at RCA, when making such transfers to early CDs, in an effort to minimize any background noise present in the original recordings, to severely cut high frequency response in the transfer thereby also eliminating any detail that the original recordings had. This practice was sometimes also used in transferring older movies to DVD to eliminate any discernible film noise resulting in a soundtrack that would be less intelligible -- a practice that I have always condemned.

I've always been a huge fan of the absolutely whacky Spike Jones music. It's amazing that they've been able to reproduce many of these zany tunes in such a high state of quality. Even though Spike and his music were considered "off the deep end", every one of the people who worked with Spike were actually superb musicians who just appreciated being able to quote, unquote "let go" every once in a while with these goofy tunes. Even though the songs were done in a crazy manner (by design, obviously) if you listen to the performances on the instruments and the quality of the vocals, these were all people who clearly were very competent musicians and singers. All of them.

I was so glad to get this excellent CD of Spike Jones music. I think the sound quality is excellent, and the zany comical routines Spike invented as at least as funny today as they were when he created them 50 years go. Its a treat to hear and keep available for those times when we need to be cheered up and made to laugh.............
