I've purchased this whole series of books for the western US, plus a couple for the Northeast. These are the best books ever (only wish they would be on Kindle) for those who want to really camp, way away from RV's and such. In fact, if you're an RV "camper" (let's be honest, RV's are just houses, not really camping), this book is not going to be very useful to you.
First of all, these books are written by people who really go camping. They give excellent information about the best tent sites, the facilities available, what's nearby, and how to get there. Just be aware, that a lot of the sites are on Forest Service roads which may not be in conditions for cars. I'm a motorcycle camper who wants to get away from it all, and this book is perfect. The first few pages give a map that allows you to see locations near where you want to go, then you go to that page, and read the review. I actually found myself reading every page, because I saw things that I wanted to explore!
What I particularly like about the book is that it gives information about campgrounds that are unique, whether it's the river nearby or the hiking paths that you can take from the campground. If you want to get away from the noise and get into fresh air and solitude, these books are perfect. I've entered a few of my favorites into my GPS system for future returns, because they give you accurate GPS coordinates.

How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness.

Dated camping guide. Some campground have changed names or reservation scheme.
Worse, the guide is hard to use: there's only one tiny area map at the beginning. Campground ordering / numbering doesn't follow any logic. Need to go back and forth constantly to find an alternative campground. No picture, no color.
Some campground are rated 2 stars out of 5: why include them in the "best" guide ?
Many good comments on the campgroud / associated park history; but I would have loved more practical comments that will help me select the perfect destination for me.
I'll try another one...

This is a great book for tent campers. It is very resourceful for the camper who doesn't want to be around A LOT of people and RV's. I like the fact that each campground is rated, ex.: beauty, site privacy, site spaciousness, quite, security and cleanliness. In some cases there is also added history about the camping area, best tent sites, hikes to go on, closest groceries store. There is also a web site, phone number and directions for each campground. That way you can call ahead of time to make sure the campground is open (some might be closed because there is still snow). Plus you can check the weather ahead of time with the web sites. Bill Mai's "The Best In Tent Camping for Southern California" is my other go to book for tent camping.

Great book but difficult to use for planning as the map is so poor (2004 edition)
Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2013Verified Purchase
The book is detailed and has led us to some lovely campgrounds. The descriptions paint a picture of the campground and surrounding area. All the essential info is there and the star ratings for beauty, privacy, spaciousness, quiet, security, cleanliness are useful.
The 2004 edition is very hard to use for planning purposes as the Northern California map is little more than a sketch. The listings are alphabetical and grouped into 3 broad regions: Coastal, Cascade Range and Sierra Nevada. It provides the address of each campground, which can be looked up individually. This is hard work for a weekend trip. I spent many hours marking up each campground individually. The effort was worth it!
I suggest providing a better road map or a link to a web page with a map (preferably one that can be used for directions, distances, times). Then we can use the book starting with the location - for short weekend trips this is essential. Distance makes a huge trip once in the mountains. At the very least, an accessibility code based on driving times from major conurbations.
The Look Inside the book for the 2008 edition skips the map so I assume that the map has not been improved - a real shame as I would buy another copy. Maybe in the 2013 edition?

I should have read all of the negative reviews more closely. I was looking for a book with more off-the-grid type camping / backpacking spots. This book simply lists car camping campgrounds (with designated sites / restrooms) that I could have easily found online, with more reviews there.

I have a collection of these books including Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, Michigan, Arkansas and Utah. I have religiously used these books and they have been spot on in guiding me to peaceful, quiet, private campsites void of RV's and all the ruckus that goes along with them. Many of the books are even site specific and you know when you arrive that the site will be amazing and just what you were looking for. The moment I opened this book I thought that somehow Menasha Ridge Press had hired an author with no concept whatsoever what tranquil camping was about. I am now planning on avoiding every park he mentioned in the area we are planning on vacationing in. Kids "swarming the area" is not my idea of tranquility. I have 3 children and brought them all up tent camping and taught them reverence for nature and the surrounding people in tents. So often he mentions hoards of children or people or waving at people and making friends with your neighbors. These books are supposed to be for people who HATE crowds...did anyone tell this guy this? I also was astonished at what he refers to as "essentials" for camping...most of which I have never even considered bringing. Ear plugs to drown out nature sounds???? A rake? Lighter fluid? Somehow I have camped my whole life and NEVER had these items packed. VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THIS BOOK.

Great book and reference; it would be the perfect camp reference book if it had an overall map with all the locations, I have to cross reference the address with the associated link to see where it is in relationship to my house...
