Edit 2: so I tried another one, and this one have a notch right in the middle of the blade which means it cuts great then suddenly snag/uneven cutting then cut great again. So there's definitely a quality control issue with these...but again you get what you pay. I'm still quite happy with at least the single scissors that is free from defect and has served me well for the cutting I've been doing recently. The good news is, I've been needing to replace some dollar store bought scissors for a while anyway so this works out, but definitely not the best set for precision work due to the quality control issues. At least this did help me figure out if I really want to continue my sewing endeavor or not - already made my Gingher 8" knife edge shears!
I started to dabble in sewing recently and due to lack of sharp enough scissors, as well as not knowing just how long I'd be dabbling with sewing, I decided to grab a pack of these since they appear to be well reviewed, comes in a set of 5, and apparently multi purpose. At the very least I didn't want to toss out $$$ for a pair of scissors that I just end up cutting paper with or something!
These arrived timely in a nice flat box with all the scissors securely fitted in with plastic wrapping around them. the tips of these are fairly sharp, as you can see from the picture, so I really don't recommend just tossing these around or if you have pets (cats! that like to bat stuff off the table!!) or children around. The blades are pretty sharp but the one thing I noticed is that the sharpness doesn't seem to go far enough down to the base of the scissors. It might be because I'm used to opening the scissors as wide as possible, then start cutting from the base - because these don't go all the way down to the base, several times I had trouble cutting and only realizing after already screwing up the cut that I need to not open them too wide.
the grips are comfortable and I love the multi colored-ness of these. I think my only complaint are the above noted issue where the sharp blade doesn't extend down as far as I'm used to, as well as how sharp the tips are. I have a relatively small sewing station and I'm super paranoid of knocking the scissors down and like stabbing myself in the foot or something. .___.
I didn't really try these on paper, but I've used it on fairly thickly embroidered fabric as well as thin woven fabric - it cuts very finely on the thin woven fabric. Even on the super thick embroidered fabric, it works quite well without me having to making multiple presses/passes to get the cut (tho I obviously have to squeeze harder).
Well not really, the handle of these scissors bends before you can take full advantage of the blades. Want to cut cardboard? They'll do it, but it won't be easy. You won't be fighting the cardboard, you'll be fighting the handles.
The handles completely give up and won't even let you cut through tougher items. I thought I had received a dud, but got a second set and they have the same problem.
You can see in the pictures how easily the handle will bend before the blade is anywhere near closed.
My students love the 5 pairs of these scissors I bought for my science/mathematics classroom--they fight to get these over the rest of my rag-tag pairs. With anywhere from 10 to 30 students in my classes, I plan on buying two more sets to help spread the love.
My students are high school age, anywhere from freshman to seniors. Last year (2016-2017 school year), I had a few students that had a less-than-stellar respect for materials and equipment: I've never had so many broken rulers and malfunctioning staplers. However, these puppies held up the entire year with nary a problem.
The scissors are well-sharpened even after a year's use. They are someone-cut-their hand/finger-while-not-paying-attention sharp. Twice I believe.
Being titanium, they cut crisply. I started doing Interactive Notebooks last year, meaning the students were cutting paper and/or card stock several times a week. With projects added in, these scissors got a decent workout. When I can't find my "big" and even sharper scissors, I happily can substitute these. If there is a downside to these great scissors, it's 8 inch, which can't be a complaint since I/you know what we're getting.
And they just look cool compared to the other scissors, with their black blades. Very metal.
5/5--will buy again to add to the collection.
