My Aprilaire system could not keep up with my home's humidity needs, but it sure did run through the hot water. With this pad, there's much more moisture transfer to the air supply. Now instead of most of the hot water going down the drain, it goes into the air (where I want it to go).
I won't even buy the standard water pad anymore. This BestAir version is the only one I will buy. In fact, if somebody gave me a stack of standard pads I would throw those away and still buy this one. The savings in hot water cost alone would justify that. With the BestAir, I get the increased comfort I am really after.
I have verified the huge performance increase by using humidity meters. Of course, the numbers vary with the amount of heating required. But here's an example of a sort of side by side test I ran in 2010. The outside temperature was consistently around zero degrees for several days (with the forecast, I saw this coming so decided to run tests).
I have a Trane heat pump system, with variable speed blower to provide a constant (but minimal) flow of air when heat or AC isn't running. This constant flow means my Aprilaire is always running also (I removed Aprilaire's original controls, which essentially render the system pointless, and installed my own system and yes I am an engineer with a significant controls background).
With the standard pad, the humidity dropped to 37%. That is well below the recommended minimum. Even the morning warmup furnace blast, which gives you the best humidification with this system, couldn't nudge it much past 40.
I changed to the BestAir before going to bed, noting a humidity of 38%.Read more ›
It does say to change them more often, so we'll see. But they are around the same price as the mesh so really it's not that bad.
If you need more humidity, try these before you spend more money on alternatives!
My humidifier is installed on the return air (cold air inlet) duct because our supply duct (hot air outlet) is inaccessible. Cold air does not produce as much humidity so it's very difficult to reach our humidity set-point. Hot water dripping down the manufacturers standard pads made out of metal keep the humidifier and water flowing 24/7. Unlike metal or plastic the paper absorbs, spreads and thins out the water giving it more contact with the air.
I notice the humidifier reaches its set point faster lowering its run time. This is an excellent product improvement.
Note: the red band side should be installed up. You'll know what I mean when you install the first one.
Overnight all my upstairs/downstairs hardwood went from the dried out buckling to the smooth flat-lying floors we needed.
It made it through this winter, and I just shut the system down for summer and there was no visible lime/calcium (whatever the white stuff is) deposits that are always covering the aluminum ones. I will be keeping the pad to start off next year and see how it goes. For the price, I will ONLY BE USING THIS and expect to replace them every year for maximum performance.
My humidifier has been on constantly during an unusually cold winter, and I go through two to three water panels per season. I recently removed the BestAir panel after using it for two months. It appeared to be in good condition with no mold, smell, or icky stuff. After replacing it with an Aprilaire 35, the humidity level as measured by the Apriaire control unit rose a few percent. This was either due to the BestAir being worn out after two months, or perhaps the Aprilaire is slightly more efficient, it's hard to say which. I also determined their claim of "up to 50% less water" to be somewhat optimistic, since the amount of water draining from the humidifier to be exactly the same as the Aprilaire.
I like the idea of paper as a material for a consumable item such as this, but if it were a better idea then I'd expect Aprilaire would provide that option.
You can save a little money by buying a two pack of the Aprilaire 35 here: Aprilaire #35 Water Panel Evaporator, 2PK At the time I posted this review, the price is actually a few cents less than buying two of these BestAir panels. If BestAir's panels were priced significantly less, they would certainly be preferable to Aprilaire's.

I won't buy these again. The other reviewers that said the pad will have to be changed every month were correct. I'm going to go back to the other pad, which lasts all season.Published 1 month ago by lisawags
