In our case, our 13 week old puppy got her jaw wedged between the wires of one of the panels. Her teeth were hooked around the wire and she was screeching in pain/fright and began to violently wrench her head trying to extricate herself from the wires. If I had not been near to help her I shudder to think what might have happened. As it turns out, I think she might have lost two front teeth in that episode. But she is teething and they might have come out normally while chewing on something. I'm not sure. My point is that this is a sturdy and well built playpen but you must watch your pet to make sure something unexpected doesn't happen.
Another caution would be to not leave the connecting rods sticking up out of the panels if you are using this inside, otherwise it could possibly cause a jumping dog to get their collar caught on it, with disastrous results. To circumvent that problem you could use nylon ties to connect the panels if using this inside.
We have a 13 week old Standard Poodle puppy who we are crate training. The house training is going OK but still some accidents when we're not as attentive as we should be. We decided to get a playpen for inside the house so we could keep our puppy contained when not in her crate. We've actually connected one of the panels to the crate with nylon ties.
In our configuration we are only using 6 of the 8 panels, otherwise if you are using all 8 panels you will essentially have an Octagon shaped area unless you deliberately shape it differently. You could easily buy several of these and extend the size of the area if you wished to do that.
This BestPet 32" playpen seemed to be the one to get. It was priced fairly and now that we've got it, I'm very happy with the quality. It's tubular steel that has been painted black. The weld joints are clearly being done in haste and we did have a problem with the hinge on the door panel. It was welded a bit crooked so the door would bind when trying to open it. However when I called the company they immediately offered to replace the entire door panel at no expense to me. I did not even have to send the original panel back. Awesome customer service!
Each panel measures 30" wide and is 32" tall. The panels connect to each other by a thin metal rod that connects the two hinge joints on each panel to each other. The panels have plastic caps on the end pieces which is great... they shouldn't harm wood flooring. The rods that connect the panels will scratch your floor however so you need to cover the ends with tiny plastic caps if you can find some, or else by wrapping them in sticky felt or something. Another option would be to use nylon ties to bind the hinges together.
The rods are long enough that when you use the playpen outside, they will stick into the ground 5" thus securing the play pen.
We're quite happy with the overall quality of the playpen and the customer service was perfect in dealing with the problem we had.
Pros: you can use the panels endlessly! Great for an individual crate or outdoors to keep pups woth you but off guests!
I went to Wal-Mart and bought zip ties for 88c and tied one panel to the top to make an actual crate. My dogs love it! There was room for accidents when they were smaller but they do stop!
- without a top our dog jumped up and got his poor paw stuck in between two panels and cried like he was having a limb cut off. It was very scary and happened in the middle of the night. So do not have them without a top unsupervised!
- if you have anything but carpet and don't attach a panel under the crate with zip ties expect this to move as the pup moves! Be sure to put a blanket to cushion the bottom!
For my Ridgebacks, I am going to get the next taller size, which will solve most of the issues I had.
