I ordered the Bestop trail cover and the day I got it we received the worst rain and wind that I can remember in Colorado. Raining at over an inch an hour, winds blowing at 35 mph steady with gusts to 75. This lasted for over 2 hours and then steady rain and wind all night long.
In the morning the interior of the jeep was perfect with only once small exception. In my Weathertec floor liners, on the driver's side where the wind was driving against the jeep, there was a very SMALL puddle of water. The small grommet hole in the side of the cover (which is advertised for a cable lock) allowed a little rain in. However, I was amazed that was all that happened after that storm.
I can put the top on by myself in 2-3 minutes. My only frustration is taking the top off with only one person. Often it's wet, having pooled in the rain the night before, or covered in condensation. Even when it is dry, I find it very hard to fold even with two people. I gave up on ever attempting to put it in the bag that came with it and settled for an unused cheap duffle bag from my garage.
One small tip for folding with one person...pull the cover off the front and stretch out the back of your jeep, looping the elastic strap around your spare tire to hold the other end while you wrestle with the folding.
Other than the folding, it's been one of the best things I've bought for the jeep. I have had numerous people stop and ask me about it, many saying they are going to buy one. It looks great!
I can put it on myself in four minutes, or one if I have a partner. It has truly never leaked as long as I did a complete job putting it on. Over the years the bands have lost some of their elasticity, but that has yet to affect the performance. The clips remain like-new.
Water will pool in the center, but this can be easily mitigated with some kind of prop from the inside. I use an umbrella or softball bat--you can easily make something with a broomstick and something curved over the end so as not to damage the top. I just prop it up between the top and the console like the center pole of a circus tent. No more water pooling!
UPDATED 2015-09-25: This top is still going strong after continued Florida weather abuse! Upgraded to 5-stars.
So... I make it a habit to not give out 5 star reviews. One, there's too many of 'em and two, what product can truly be perfect?
However, this Bestop cover just might make me reconsider. I'll give it FOUR STARS to start just because Florida is HARD on gear, and this is my third top for my Rubicon (my first cover was a Smittybilt 825 cover http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B001CF3NPG but don't bother - it lasted 8 months before leaking... my second cover was supposed to be a quality 10mil UV treated tarp, don't bother with that either as it only made it 7 months http://smile.amazon.com/Heavy-Duty-White-10-mil-312164/dp/B000FH5UVC)
The fit is fantastic. It goes up quicker than a full car cover or my once-trusty tarp. And it keeps the rain out... and we're taking monsoon level summer rain in Florida. So far I'm pretty damned impressed.
I'll update this review in a year or so and we'll see how well the trail cover holds up.
However, I don't think it would ride well on your Jeep if it was on a trailer. I think it would catch took much air and stretch the elastic.
