Disclaimer: I won a copy of this book from a contest. I was not paid to read and review this book. All opinions are my own and was never influenced by anything or anyone.
After everything that happened in the first book (Promises (Book One of The Syrenka Series)), after everything Eviana did to save Brendan, he just goes off and leave her. But not because he doesn't love her anymore, but because he was afraid of what Eviana can do. I think.
Reading this, I was happy in a way because with Brendan out of the picture, there's a chance for Kain again, but that doesn't seem to be the case. A new love interest shows it's ugly pretty head and wants Eviana all to himself. Honestly, I was attracted to this new character too but something doesn't feel right about him and I still love Kain, I felt like I was being unfaithful. LOL.
With Lucian Sutherland declaring war in the mermaid community, threatening to take over all creatures if he doesn't get what he wants, Eviana has to find a way to stop him. After she demonstrated her mermaid powers, the Council sends her to train with Jeremiah, a very repulsive merman. It seemed to be the only way to strengthen her powers, and during that time she got to know Jeremiah and his crazy ideas better.
I didn't quite expect the twist in the story. I should have known that was the case but I didn't want to believe it was possible. If I was conflicted before, the more I felt conflicted now. I wanted to hate him but I couldn't, because I still liked how he interacts with Eviana.
Did I mention that I love Kain?
I found this book to be just as fast-paced and fun with lots of adventure and great fantasy characters as the first book of the series. I haven't read many mermaid fiction before, and I found it interesting how the author presented the mermaid culture and their history. I also loved how she continues to incorporate other mythological sea creatures into the narrative - like water sprites, selkies, and naiads. They brought a unique and refreshing feel to the mermaid genre in young adult fiction. The author went a bit deeper into merfolk culture and society with this installment, which I found to be really riveting.
Like the first book of the series, this story was somewhat predictable but had great twists that I didn't see coming. I easily reconnected to Eviana and easily identified with her early in the story. The ending was a good fit for a second book in a series - it doesn't leave the ending too closed and it doesn't leave too many questions unanswered either. All in all, 'Betrayal' is a great continuation to a fun and interesting series. Fans of paranormal YA fiction and mermaid lore will love this series.
Disclosure: I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Eviana Dumahl went through a whirlwind of heartache in the first book of the Syrenka series. Now in this this second installment, `Betrayal' Eviana is back with her family and friends. She now has to take her role as clan leader now that her parents have been brutally murdered by a crazy mermaid. Eviana and Kain settle into their clan leader roles and go on to meet the council, which are the head of the mermaids, in order to discuss what to do in their battle against their biggest villain Lucian Sutherland. This book has no shortage of drama or action. Eviana unravels some of the mysterious behind Lucian's intentions but the question is will she be able to handle it or will she let it destroy her?
I am absolutely in love with this series I wish they would make them into movies! Those would be amazing to see on the big screen! As you know if you read my review of the first book, `Promises' I did like Brendan but a big part of me hoped for Eviana and Kain to get together. Well `Betrayal' totally changed my view on Brendan; I no longer like him at all. I think his actions in the second book are very selfish and childish and I really hope Eviana is done with him because now he just grates on my nerves. I absolutely adore Kain and I believe him and Eviana belong together. I did love all the drama the love triangle caused though. There's also another man introduced into Eviana's life in this one his name is Graham and he is a council member. He also plays a very big role in this book.
I don't want to give you too many spoilers because this is just too good of a book but I just loved and devoured this book in two days.Read more ›
