The Betrayal is about two brothers -one gifted and one not - who will do anything to keep each other safe. When the Demon Alanya targets Matthew for his powers, Zack feels almost powerless to stop him. Even when several other characters come into play there is still a battle on for everyone's lives.
I think what I liked about this book was that the demon really acted like a demon. He was evil, demented and slightly sadistic in his dealings with Zack and Matthew. He fed on the anger, hatred and the worst of the human elements. And, even though I don't really understand how he ended up in the cave and I only know a tiny little bit about him and his back story, it was worth reading the book just for him.
I also liked the other characters as well. I actually can't think of any character I didn't like, well, except for the one I wasn't meant to like. There were several characters as well as the main ones. All, that worked as a team to bring down the bad guy. Shane was the one who had had the most history with the demon. He was brave, even self-sacrificing.
Now I must admit that when I first started reading this book, I wasn't sure if I was going to like it or not. Something just seemed a little flat - the writing I guess. And, I won't deny that I think that the book could be so much more than it was, especially when it was the secondary characters that appealed to me more than the main ones. But, I also won't dispute that as I read on I got pulled into the story and couldn't help cheering on the good guys. I wanted to see if they ended up defeating the monster so everything else kind of faded out after awhile. I think that the plot was actually quite clever in the way that Matt, Zach and their older friends all made up part of a team that hunted evil monsters.
I would recommend this book to people who like demons portrayed as demons and for those who like suspense and just a little violence.
This is a paranormal YA novel but unlike most novels in the genre the main character is a boy which I personally found to be a nice change of pace because there is only so many YA novels I can read with whining girls as the main characters.
I was really impressed with this first novel in The Dark Circle Saga. It reminded me a lot of the TV show Supernatural in a way because there are two brothers as the main focus of the book and they're just like Sam and Dean. Always trying to save each other from the darkness which in this case is a cave dwelling Demon and we all know they're never the good guys.
The plot of the novel was really well set out and the pacing of it was perfect. The author didn't throw everything at the reader at once and just ride out the waves until the end, the story was written the proper way with appropriate spacing between the major events happening in it and I think that is what kept me reading straight through.
I also really enjoyed the characters Matt and Zach along with their friends were great and I love the dialogue between them. It wasn't awkward or halting in anyway and they sounded like how kids really talk so that's another way that the author won me over.
Overall I really like The Betrayal. It wasn't anything like how I expected it would be but that takes nothing away from how much I enjoyed it and it's one that I'm going to have Mr. Turning the Pages read and maybe review at a later date because I think he would love this book. I highly recommend this novel to everyone who enjoys YA paranormal novels with a lot of action. I'm looking forward to reading more of this authors books and can't wait for book two of the series!

The Betrayal was an okay read for me. I liked the fact that the main characters were males. They didn't blow me away, but I did like them. I have been to Cades Cove where some of the story took place, so I found that part to be really interesting. There were some intense battles between Alyana, and the boys and their friends. The book was fast paced, though it did get a bit redundant at times with the boys fighting the same type battle multiple times, though in different settings, and in great detail. The ending, while good, was rather predictable, and with all the testing and torture these guys endured, I would have liked to have seen it be a little more grandiose. If you enjoy paranormal thriller type novels and like to read about demons, then you might want to check this book out.
