I bought a copy for my avid gardening friend & decided I would like one, too. The price was low & the book is like new. Most of my gardening books are 20 to 40 years old. This one was published in 2005 & is comprehensive. The photos are beautiful as well. For example, it lists the Morden shrub roses bred in Canada, which did not exist when my book on roses was published some 30 years ago.

It was a huge book, it great condition and came right on time. It is full of information, but is covers so much, that it limits the information for each plant, or subject. Trying to cover so much I guess. Lovely pictures.

This book is tremendously informative. The colorful pictures make the plants easy to identify and describes the plant in detail. There is a section on diseases and problems and how to prevent as well as cure them. The book covers planning, lawns, trees, shrubs, perennials, vines, ground covers, annuals and bulbs, veggies, herbs, pests as well as info on tools, irrigation, cuttings, fertilizer, and a lot more. It is a beautiful book and fun to "just read" or use as a reference.

A good go-to for me when wanting to research on a light level, a little on a variety of topics or specific garden plantings. I am giving it only 3 out of 5 stars though for the following reasons:

1) It may be good as a first time gardener, just some basics (i.e. a quick overview of say 20 bushes that might work for a range of zones)
2) Ideas it gives (i.e. for kid-friendly backyards) this book lacks much indepth info or how-to's
3) Awkward layout in bushes, trees, flowers sections...for example, you will see maybe 5 Ash Tree varieties, and then 2 photos on that page, and then maybe a 3rd photo on the next page with a bunch of listing for Elm trees, and then many trees that have info but no photos...BHG: PLEASE PUT A SMALLER THUMBNAIL PHOTO NEXT TO EACH ENTRY!!!!

This was a good value and is a great book to have on the library. If you are interested in plants and gardening. Beautifully illustrated with great photography. Also includes phonetic spellings of Latin names.

This is a beautifully produced book that has terrific basic information. Of course, every region has its challenges, but this is a nice addition to any gardener's library.

If you are looking for a good book to dive into all the questions that you need answered than this is not the book for you.. The pictures are beautiful, however they often do not cotain the names of the plants used in the designs. There is a handful of your run of the mill plants, roses, tropicals and vegetables. This book is good if you are looking for a lot of basic information fast. It does talk generally about composting and winterizing and preparing your beds. It also discusses pests, soil types, watering, fertilizer and dividing (extremely general). If you are an avid gardner this is not the book for you.
