This was a hard one to write. As as huge fan of the Silversun Pickups, I've seen them in concert twice and have loved much of their body of work. They're a band that manages to create music that's both beautiful and heavy at the same time, with each of their albums featuring no shortage of standout moments and true emotion.

Better Nature, though, sees the Pickups choosing to hide their musical talents behind a wall of synth, releasing an album that's more electronic than instrumental, and one that as a result lacks much of what makes this band so great.

From the start, something doesn't feel right. The opening track Cradle sounds like it was intended to be a heavy one, from the vocals to the structure, but when you get to what should be a heavy chorus, the music simply continues at the same tempo and speed, leading to a track that on a first listen came across as almost forgettable. And as I listened to Better Nature for the first time, I felt my mind wandering and wondered why nothing in these songs was standing out to me.

Eventually I realized that the problem was the lack of guitar...or really, any instrument, throughout; Better Nature sees electronics and synthesizing used to imitate the sounds of instruments. You can hear electronic noise and effects that are meant to be the guitar, the drums, and the bass, but isn't. Much of Better Nature sounds like the soundtrack to a video game, and not a bad one, necessarily, but as a Silversun Pickups effort, it comes across as a watered down one.

It's tough for me to get into synth.

Let me preface this by saying I've been a huge fan of SSPU since I heard Lazy Eye on the radio. I don't get the negative or mediocre reviews on here, though. No, this album does not sound like a direct sequel to Carnavas or even Swoon. Yes, they embrace more electronic influences. Granted, I also (really) like the electronica genre, so that doesn't put me off, but this is still the same band that made The Royal We (my favorite from Swoon.) Maybe this album is a little more pop/radio-friendly(?), but in spite of that, I really, really like it (I don't typically like "popular" music.) I can't get enough of this album. As soon as I finish listening to it all the way through, I feel the urge to just start it over. It's easily my favorite release so far this year. The only track I didn't love at first was The Wild Kind, but it has really grown on me since then; I can now say I love this thing from start to finish.

I converted my wife as a fan a couple years ago, we saw them live on their last tour, and she feels the same way about this album. I had my colleague listen to the opening track as his first real exposure to the band, and he was hooked. (I then had him watch the video for Cannibal, and he threw his headphones off and said, "That was so... awesome! Man, that bassline!") I played the album at home, and my 6-yr-old just started rockin out, especially to Tapedeck. Seeing her hop across the kitchen floor on one foot, other foot in the air, while wailing on an air guitar was very gratifying.

Bottom line: give it a chance, and leave your preconceptions at the door.

Remember when these guys were a ROCK band? Like instruments? Buzzing 90's guitar, driving basslines, frantic drumming. This is a synth rock album. This takes what they started on Neck Of The Woods a step further. Some tracks are completely void of live instruments at all. His voice (and hers) is still great. The lyrics can be cool sometimes. And the chord progressions are still a strong aspect of the song-writing. But it's not the same. Every song builds to no crescendo. The worst part is, if you were a fan of this band, you'll be able to hear what this album could have been when you listen to it. Making it all the more frustrating. I get that bands change. I get that these guys are in their late 30's and they just wanna provide for their families. That's all good. I'm just a massive Swoon fan that needed to vent. Still better than contemporary rock radio.

Could've been better. The best bits of the bands sound seem to have been edited back and replaced with pop . I still adore the lead singers voice and the lyrics still remain interesting enough but they need to ditch the producer and work with someone else . The band work best when they're sounding creepy and guitars are fuzzing out .

Disappointing. I'm used to the more aggressive sound from Neck of the Woods or Swoon. This doesn't have any of the driving power of the other two and is, frankly, annoying. What happened to this band?

One of the coolest things about a new album by Silversun Pickups is that it reminds you of an old friend who comes to dinner—once again, with even more interesting stories to tell since last time. The Los Angeles-based quartet’s ever-expanding sound comes accross impeccably on their fourth full-length album, Better Nature which comes out on September 25th via their own New Machine Recordings.

Produced once again by Jacknife Lee (who helmed their previous effort Neck of the Woods), their sprawling cinematic sound pours outward from every track, as evident from the opener Crawling (Better Nature.) Lead vocalist and guitarist Brian Aubert‘s shimmering guitar tone and unique vocal range open things up with a familiar feel but as it progresses, the album takes you to new places unlike any of the band’s previous releases. Connection and Pins and Needles pull out all the stops, with tight guitar riffs, in your face drum and bass rhythms, and of course Joe Lester‘s haunting ethereal backdrops.

Friendly Fires is a slow-paced declaration, followed by lead-off single Nightlights, which is probably the closest track that bares resemblance to anything found on 2012s Neck of the Woods. Circadian Rhythm (Last Dance), the latest single employs bassist Nikki Monninger‘s vocals as she trades verses with Aubert in a prominent manner. The track, as well as much of the album, feels like a hint of an 80s throwback—but just a hint. Tapedeck, probably the quirkiest of the collection, showcases drummer Christophen Gaunlao‘s upbeat tempos quite nicely as the song throws the listener all over the place as the track turns off every which way.
