The soulful sound and words of "If you Wanted Me" was the front runner for me until I listened to the bonus track "Glorious Day." Todd breathed new life into that old hymn! But what made my heart leap, and just about evoked a shout, was when Todd sang so powerfully and passionately "One day He's coming, oh glorious day!" Between the powerful worship in "Our Great God," the love song from God in "Martyr's Song" and the sound of hope and victory in "Glorious Day" I could just float away up to heaven and not have any regrets about leaving this world.
This new CD is a provocative, inspirational, powerful combination of great music and profound lyrics. The raw honesty about life's struggles resonate with everyone who has questions only God can answer. Some of the lyrics provoke us to examine ourselves to see how God can use us as His hands and feet to reach out to a hurting world.
Thanks to Todd for continuing to listen to and struggle with God. The two of them are a powerful combination!
The album begins with a country-flavoured 'Still Has a Hold.' The very next song is a rocking number called 'Least of These.' The album slows down a little for the thought-provoking 'If You Wanted Me,' a remake of Fernando Ortega & Mac Powell's 'Our Great God,' and the beautiful 'Lovers in our Heads.' Then Todd turns reggae on us for 'Peace on Earth.' In my opinion, this song really doesn't work too well. The rap in the middle seems a little ill-timed, too. 'Funny' is a light, fun-sounding song, though of course it packs as much lyrical punch as anything else on the album. 'Don't Say a Word' has its own sound, and is a lot of fun. The next song is one of the heavier and stronger songs on this release: 'War Inside,' which tackles the problem many of us struggle with: the battle between the person we want to be and the sinful one that comes out all too often. 'Martyr's Song' was previously released with Ted Dekker's book of the same title. It is an amazing song that brings tears to my eyes each time I hear it. One of the most lyrically challenging songs on the disc is 'On a Corner in Memphis.' Then comes another mediocre song in my opinion, 'Family.' It's another one that doesn't fall within Todd Agnew's typical repertoire, though I'm sure it will be enjoyed by many. 'Preachers and Thieves' is another nice acoustic number, and the CD rounds itself off with 'Can I Be With You' which is a great self-reflection kind of tune. Though that is all for the listed tracks, there's more!Read more ›
In my opinion, Agnew has a certain type of soulfulness that I couldn't really put my finger on with Grace Like Rain, but I could tell it was there. Better Questions seems to have given Agnew the room he needed to express that soulfulness to an even greater degree. If you need proof, just listen to "On a Corner in Memphis" and try and tell me this man does not feel the blues. He certainly does. Other exceptional tracks include "Least of These", "Peace on Earth" and "Funny". The whole album really is great, though.
My wife and I also traveled to Indianapolis for the Better Questions Tour. If you have the chance, go see him on the road!
