I purchased Better Than Bouillon No Beef Base Vegetarian for my daughter who hasn't eaten meat for over three years. She's a college student who will have her own kitchen this year and I came upon this product while looking for products she might like to have on hand.

I decided to use my Instant Pot to make a veggie soup last night, using this product as the base. I took 1tsp and placed it into 8 ounces of boiling water.

NOTE: The base has a tar-like consistency, so it's tough to get an exact measurement and boiling hot water is important because it needs that heat to dissolve. Make sure to clean the rim of the jar before storing in the refrigerator or you'll have a tough time getting the jar lid off.

I tasted it and was delighted to find that it tasted 'better than' beef bouillon! Amazing stuff really. It uses onions, carrots, and celery along with other magic to create a taste that is spot on - even for a carnivore like me. Beef-like flavor is wonderful and I think most beef-eaters like me would find it tough to tell the difference.

The soup was a hit, and both my daughter and I are excited to use this product to make gravy, add to stir fry, and to add additional richness and flavor to soups and burgers.

It's expensive by comparison to cubes, but really delicious!

Best mushroom cream sauce I have ever had!

OK, so I was a little bit skeptical of purchasing this since as you know, a mushroom sauce can taste either delicious or horrible. I only use "better than bouillon" brand for chicken and beef bouillon. I was not disappointed, and this makes an amazing cream sauce. This is best with fresh mushrooms, but canned mushrooms can also be used. Rinse the mushrooms, then pat dry as much as possible, followed by a sauté in oil of choice. I like to mix olive oil and butter. Mix with a little bit of red or white wine after they have been sautéing for about five minutes, depending on what meat you are going to be putting in the sauce. You can skip the wine if you're not a wine drinker. I have also used beer which was surprisingly good. Make sure that you allow it to soak up the mushroom so that it is very little liquid left in the pan. Add your mushroom bouillon, followed by cream, half-and-half, milk, or Greek yogurt (my personal favorite). This is the most amazing mushroom sauce I have ever made! This should be done on low-medium to medium heat to avoid curdling the milk. You can then add cooked meat of your choosing. It also helps if you cook the meat in whatever oil you plan to use, then use that or oil to sauté the mushrooms ( first step of the recipe). Just recently discovered the Better Than Bouillon line of products and absolutely love them! The only thing I don’t love is the price here on Amazon. This stuff costs around 4 bucks in most local stores. Unfortunately, mine didn’t carry this particular flavor. I cooked a huge pot of chili this week and this base sets the flavor off really well. It gives it that extra umph! The 8oz. Jar only makes 25 servings, so it’s not very cost effective compared to the other flavors such as chicken or beef. Will continue looking for this one in some of the local stores, instead of paying highway robbery prices here.

The jar I received was a totally different color to the one I bought the day after. I needed it for Thanksgiving. It was awful!! The taste was disgusting! I bought a jar for less than half of this product and it was less than half the size too!!
From the photos you can see the difference. The larger one is the correct color from my local store. The smaller one on the right is from Amazon. And I cannot return it!!! Not happy about this purchase at all. -Evelyn

This is not a review of the product itself, but of my purchase. Be aware that this is not the standard 8 oz. jar that you are probably expecting. It's actually 3.5 oz., almost more a "sample size." Though the size of this 3.5 oz. jar is clearly on view in the product description, you will, in fact, be ordering a jar that is less than half the quantity of a typical jar. Part of what may confuse the customer is that the price to purchase this through Amazon is even higher than what you would pay for an 8 oz. jar at the grocery store. Since you are paying a premium it is easy to assume that you would certainly be getting at least a standard 8 oz. jar. In short, you are paying more than twice the standard retail price for less than half the typical amount of bouillon.

Though I feel cheated, because the product's size was clearly displayed when I purchased it, ultimately I can only blame myself and learn to be far more careful and discriminating when buying items such as these online, and warn others such as yourself to do the same.

I use the beef and chicken flavor all of the time. But for some reason you cannot find the ham flavor in the stores. It cost about 3 times what you pay in the store, but I think it is worth it since it will last a long time.
I don't worry about the 'use by date' too much because it can be frozen in small quantities (about 2 tablespoons) for a long time. Just wrap it in plastic wrap, then foil. Then I put the little packets in a freezer bag or container.

i had a friend who find finding it tough going. Doesn't drive, has difficulty walking and no money for food. I'm 4 hrs away so i couldn't drop something off. i ordered a box of staples like bean, rice, herbs, spices and jars off this bouillon. She called raving about this product. She had never used a soup base before. She said she even enjoyed a cup of hot bouillon by itself when she wasn't up to cooking so I'd say you have a happy customer. when she had her health she was a gourmet cook so I'll take her word for it.

The product was delivered on a timely basis as expected. i think she received her box of food and bouillon in two days.

Note:I sent both the chicken and beef. She was very pleased with both.

I seriously questioned the health of my mind when I bought this shockingly expensive stock/bouillon recently. I’m not even vegeterian, never mind vegan. Yet....I just ordered it again. Because it is phenomenally good. REALLY, really good. It makes an incredible difference to the taste of any soup. One...or at least I, who is a good cook.... simply doesn’t get that depth of flavour from even the best stock cube or even a homemade stock. No idea HOW they make that stuff but it is absolutely sensational. In regards to the eye watering price - I am consoling myself that I have often paid that much, indeed significantly more, for some hoity-poloity olive oil at the supermarket whose taste WASN’T any better than an oil costing a small fraction of the price. If I had family or friends in the USA I’d beg them to send me this stock as a birthday or Christmas present but, regrettably, I don’t, so I’ll have to fork out for it. Mine arrived ( via Prime) the next day and with a good expiration date on it ( May 2022). NB do refrigerate after opening! In summary: if the thought of spending that much money on flipping broth doesn’t make you hyperventilate ( which it did me)...go for it. Alternatively, ruthlessly pester any and all friends in the USA to send some.

This is a product I have been using for some years but I am SICK of the price fluctuations. It was 9.94 in December 2019 and now it is 50% dearer! Also the quality varies so much in the last year, so now I never order more than one jar at a time, as the last time that I ordered two jars whilst they were at a lower price, both the jars had approx 2cms of head space in them AND the top cm of the product under that 2 cm free space was just oil! Am now committed to getting out my yeast extract and miso paste and boiling down some root veg and celery to make my own to freeze in usable portions. They need to get their price act together along with their quality control!!

Over the last six months, l have changed my diet from meat to plant base diet and this was recommended by a friend. Yes, l thought it was expensive but seeing as it's only me and the jar, lasted me six weeks then it's not bad value for just one person. For me, the taste is the best l have ever tasted and knowing that there is no meat, be it chicken in it astonished me as it taste fantastic and l have checked other companies and on the high street and it's far more expensive if l was to buy it anywhere else but here. It has become my go to when cooking now and l feel l would be lost without it now. If you have never tried it all l can say is, give it a go!
