Betty Hutton's career boasted such all-time classics as "Miracle of Morgan's Creek", "Annie Get Your Gun" and Cecil B. DeMille's "The Greatest Show on Earth", but by 1959, the bubbly blonde musical dynamo was persona-non-grata in Hollywood. Walking out of her lucractive Paramount contract in 1952 when her demands for director approval fell on deaf ears, Hutton turned to television in 1959, when the Desilu company (probably scrambling to fill the void created by the soon-to-end "I Love Lucy") offered Hutton her own sitcom.

THE BETTY HUTTON SHOW (aka "Goldie") showcased Hutton as Goldie Appleby, a former showgirl-turned manicurist who'se assigned to care for Pat, Nicky and Roy, the orphaned children of Mr. Strickland, one of her former clients. Hutton's comedic strengths are well catered-to (there's lots of her trademark eye-rolling and camera mugging) but this period was also one of tremendous flux and strain in her personal life. Old-school trouper that she was, none of Hutton's off-screen issues seem to colour her infectious performance as Goldie.

Talented former child star Gigi Perreau is Pat Strickland, with her real-life brother Peter Miles playing Nicky. They had frequently appeared together in movies (like the underrated "Enchantment") but this was the only time they played siblings on screen. David White (aka Larry Tate on "Bewitched") was Mr. Strickland. THE BETTY HUTTON SHOW only lasted one season; it was killed in the ratings by the rival "Donna Reed Show".

Episodes:

"The Seaton Story" - When lawyer Mr. Seaton (Tom Conway) is relentlessly chased by a beautiful blonde nightclub owner (Joyce Jameson), Goldie decides to masquerade as Seaton's perfectly British "wife".

You either are, or you aren't. A Betty Hutton fan, that is. If you're not, you probably aren't reading this anyway, but for Betty's many fans, this is a treat. Betty Hutton's sole attempt at a series, save for a pilot she shot one year earlier, she plays Goldie Appleby, guardian of the Strickland millions and the late Mr. Strickland's three children. Her character is a manicurist and a former showgirl who dosen't quite fit in with the gentility she has inherited. Betty gets a chance to use all her mugging and eye-rolling tricks here to a good effect. The writing isn't bad, and the Desilu production has sheen. It must be said that Ms. Hutton looks absolutely gorgeous in this series, beautifully coiffed and gowned. It has been said that this show was not a success since it competed against The Donna Reed Show (of which I am also a fan), and it's a shame the show only had the one season on the air. A novel format.
