I love Stan Rogers, and this is my favorite of his CDs that I own. It contains the absolute best version of "Mary Ellen Carter," and "The Witch of the Westmareland" is worth the price of the CD alone. I'm so desperately sad that I didn't "discover" Stan Rogers until after his death. I would have loved to have seen him and his band live, as this album indicates how awesome they were live. Highly HIGHLY recommended.
P.S. "The Witch of the Westmareland" led me to Archie Fisher who I stupidly didn't realize at first was one of the Fisher Family. I have a CD version of an LP that the Fisher Family recorded in the 1960s. My favorite song on that album was "Joy of My Heart." Finding Archie's solo recordings through this Stan Rogers album brought me Archie's own version of "Joy of My Heart." Yay!

I think these guys did their best work live. If you aren't acquainted with them, I highly recommend introducing yourself.

Stan Rogers was the quintessential folk balladeer of the Great Lakes and Canada in the Seventies and Eighties...or at least it seemed so to me, having discovered his music so soon before his tragic death in the early Eighties. This CD is chock full of examples of what made him a great influence on the generation to come. I love Rogers' strong baritone, the take-no-prisoners lyrics in songs like the Mary Ellen Carter (encouragement to anyone facing discouragement), and the musicianship of bandsmen Garnet Rogers, David Alan Edie, Grit Larskins and Curly Boy Stubbs are stellar.
The song selection is terrific except for one note....who would have thought in 1979 how poorly Nigell Russel's computer dirge "White Collar Holler would have aged. It was funny then, believe me!

Bought the CD as an homage to Stan Rogers. A few of his songs are of that rare quality that will be remembered for generations and sung for a long, long time and some of those songs are on this CD. You'll figure out which ones they are on your own when you buy and listen to the CD.

This is the Stan Rogers album I heard first, back before his death, and all things considered, I think this incredibly spirited live set is still the best introduction to Rogers' music. Included are the definitive versions of "Barrett's Privateers" and "Mary Ellen Carter," the haunting "First Christmas" (ever a contender as the saddest song ever written), and the thought-provoking lament "Harris and the Mare." And that's not all...
The songs on this album represent Rogers' songwriting talent at full flower and the band is snapping with energy. My only complaint -- gee I wish they'd used a better vocal mic. It's not awful, but fairly typical of the late 70s.

Great folk music by a fine singer and a great band. Stan Rogers and company do a great job in this live recording. They play many but not all of Stan's wonderful songs. I particularly like the "Witch of the West Merland" originally done by Archie Fisher and the whaling anthem "Going Down To Old Maui"

Stan Rogers has a rich and powerful voice. He was not only a talented performer, but a prolific writer of some truly wonderful songs, amongst which are The mary Ellen Carter and the Flowers of Bermuda, both of which are on this album. The legacy of his talent lives on.

Having only been listening to the more 'traditional' end of folk music since after Stan's death I've only discovered him relatively recently, but this is an absolutely first-rate album. Everything is perfect - great songs, fantastic performances from Stan and the whole band, and amazing sound quality (you would think it was recorded in a studio rather than live).
'Mary Ellen Carter' is probably the main crowd-pleaser, but my personal favourite is 'First Christmas...', one of the most poignant songs I have ever come across, although perhaps not to everybody's taste.
If you like folk music and you are not familiar with Stan Rogers then please but this album...
