Ever since I read clipped wings, I haven’t been able to get enough of it. I pretty much vowed to stalk Helena until I got more of these very broken but even more endearing characters. Especially after having Clipped Wings end in a cliffhanger.
This novella picks up right where Clipped Wings left off with a very determined Hayden on his way to get Tenley, and it mainly follows Hayden’s distress from Chris’ point of view.
While Between the Cracks nicely ties the first and second book together, giving us a heart wrenching and sad outlook on Hayden’s state of mind and future. It also clearly depicts Chris’ character.
“As much as Tee might be struggling with her own s***, I was pissed at her for doing this to him.”
It was difficult to get an accurate perception of Chris before. I mainly thought of him as one of the sexy tattooists that co-owned Inked Armor. Playful and man whoreish, and part of the close knit group of friends who also worked at the tattoo shop.
There is without a doubt much more to Chris than what we know. He’s a loyal, caring and supportive friend. He doesn’t hesitate in helping Hayden however he can.
“I’m glad I met you. You’re a really good guy. Take care of Hayden.” ~ Sarah
Even though I’m torn for Hayden and Tenley’s sake, this short is no less enjoyable. It gives us enough of Chris’ personality to like him more and want to know further. And Helena also includes the fun, flirty side of him and Sarah in a prelude to their growing relationship.
4.5 cracked stars
Note: I strongly suggest this series be read in the correct order.
Between the Cracks starts off right after Clipped Wings ends. If you haven't read Clipped Wings yet, you should be warned that it does end in a bit of a ...to be continued kind of way. Chris is one of Hayden's best friends and a tattoo artist at Inked Armor. He's a bit reckless and a womanizer, until Tenley's neighbor, Sarah, catches his eye. After weeks of perusing her (which we get to see in Cupcakes and Ink and Clipped Wings), Chris tones it down and shows Sarah how much he really likes her. As opposed to only wanting to get in her pants. I loved seeing Sarah slowly caving to his charms. I think these two are so good together and I'm excited to read their next novella!
While Between the Cracks is told in Chris's POV, it is still heavily focused on Hayden. I'm not complaining because I love Hayden and this was more of a bridge between books. While it's only 50-ish pages, it was memorable and I do think it's important to read before Inked Armor. I really hope that Chris and Sarah end up having their own full-length story. Between the Cracks was a great addition to the Clipped Wings series. I looooooove this cover!
1.5 in the Clipped Wings series
Chris keeps his friends close and women farther away. He recently finds himself in a relationship with Sarah. Chris’s best friend is having relationship problems of his own. Chris decides to help Hayden out, but it doesn’t turn out to go so well. This is a pretty quick read. In comparison to the first novella of the Clipped Wings series it’s very weak, but it is also better than the first book in the series. I do like Sarah and Chris’s relationship, but at the same time I’m not a big fan of it. I’m conflicted with this book. I did like the whole Hayden going to rescue and save Tenley thing but it was quickly shot down. I honestly don’t have much to say about this one. It was just meh.
Cover Thoughts: I do like the cover. It’s simple, but gorgeous.
