Hollywood is the place of dreams---people dream of being famous stars, writers, and directors. One in a million actually breaks through in the industry and makes it. David A.R. White is one in a million. But because he’s done it without abandoning his Christian faith, which is part of his life since his Kansas childhood, he’s one in 10 million! His remarkable story of dreams coming true without surrender to the secular is now captured in his fascinating book, Between Heaven and Hollywood. Funny, earthy, and real---it’s as good as his movies! (Governor Mike Huckabee, former Governor of Arkansas, NY Times bestselling author)
As a child I could daydream with great ease, and so many of the things I dreamed were realized with equal ease. But then as a child my trust in God also came so easily . . . then, I had a childlike faith. As time went on, as it undoubtedly will . . . the challenges of life . . . the many stumbling blocks and heartbreaks called into question that faith, demanding all the while that I deepen my relationship with God and strengthen my dependence on Him, if once again, the dreams He placed in my heart were ever again to become a reality. I only wish I had this “gem of a book” to encourage me along my journey and make the path a bit more clear, as I surrendered the dreams in my heart to His purpose for my life. But I have it now. This book not only reawakens our ability to dream, it can reintroduce us to the greatest relationship of our lives. Dreams are but a vision of His Plan for Our Lives. (Actress and Author Robin Giv ens)
Reading David’s story, I felt at times I was reading about myself because our stories are similar in many ways. Citizens of Heaven, working in Hollywood. As he points out so eloquently, each of us is a deliberate creation of God, with a God-breathed dream inside us. And each unique, with a wonderful future---if we let Him lead us. I wish every young dreamer would read David’s story; it’s entertaining, sometimes funny, often inspirational, and eventually thrilling. And it’s chock full of God’s Word and will for all of us, but employed in individual and surprising ways. You’ve done big things, David---but this book may well be your best production. (Pat Boone, Entertainer)
I met David when we worked together on the set of the Pure Flix film Redeemed. This book and how David lives his life are an inspiration to me and many others who feel called to work in the entertainment industry. (Megan Alexander, National TV Reporter; Author of Faith in the Spotlight)
David’s story will inspire you to honor God by pursuing the dreams He places in your heart. Between Heaven and Hollywood gives you a roadmap of how to overcome the challenges you will face if you seek to be a witness for Christ in the public arena. (Dr. Rice Broocks, Author of t he book God’s Not Dead)
David A.R. White, in his book Between Heaven and Hollywood, has touched the human heart as he strikes a familiar chord with all people who desire to see their dreams fulfilled in their lifetime. In his popular movies God’s Not Dead and God’s Not Dead 2, we see him stand firm and fearless in his faith; being bold in his presentation of God’s infinite character to a world who blatantly denies His existence. As with his work on screen, this book will enthrall the reader to aspire to the heights he has reached. He is a man who has defied the odds and demonstrated his persistence in pursing his dreams according to God’s divine purpose. (Raul Ries, Pastor of Calvary Chapel, Golden Springs in Diamond Bar, California)
David A.R. White is a preacher’s kid from a small town next to nowhere, with God-given dreams that pushed him naively and courageously into the Hollywood abyss. I trust and I have enjoyed working for and with David and was surprised because I thought I knew much of his successful journey into “The Business.” I was pleasantly surprised to read of his trials and tribulations as he has proven to be a significant Hollywood player while armed with his faith and trust in God. Between Heaven and Hollywood is filled with inspiration from a man who grew up on a wheat farm in Kansas without a single connection in Hollywood . . . except perhaps his connection to God. After reading this book I’m reminded of how deep his faith is, and why he was making Christian movies long before it was considered “good business.” He has accomplished a small miracle: honoring the Lord while making successful profitable films of faith in Hollywood. This book is an inspirational guide to following your God-given dreams and reminds us that it’s our unexceptional ordinariness that make us so uniquely extraordinary. Take a chance and read this book . . . it could change the way you see yourself, your faith, and how you go about pursuing your life and dreams. (Ted Mc Ginley, Actor and Star of Do You Believe?)
Between Heaven and Hollywood elucidates the hidden tension within each one of us between the ache to pursue a dream and fear that we will fail. David A.R. White courageously challenges us to dream bigger and trust God more boldly. White masterfully draws us into his very personal struggle of dreaming big, relying on God more severely, and wrestling with fear of failure. Between Heaven and Hollywood inspires us to leave trepidation in the dust and hand our biggest passions to God. (Meg Meeker, MD, Bestselling Author of Strong Fathers, Strong Daughters)

The son of a Mennonite minister he lived a sheltered life, only ever seeing one movie (Grease, on an outing with a friend's family) in the first 18 years of his life.
Mr. White goes into his past to show readers how just because your a good Christian it doesn't mean your life will be without hard times, failures, and heart break ("we should expect life to stink sometimes, even for those of us who belong to God through faith in Christ"). But what I loved the most was how he explains that dreams, those things you feel inspired to do, but are so afraid to try, are actually from God and that He created you with everything you need to achieve them ("Courage is not the absence of fear but the triumph over it and the understanding that what lies on the other side of fear is something worth risking." and "Turn your focus away from all the obstacles you feel are in your way (real or imagined) and concentrate on God, who is capable of anything..."). I love how he talks about the fact that no two people are alike, which proves that each individual was created to bring something specific that only they could bring into the world.
"You are here for a reason--that reason, that unique destiny, is found in your God-given dream."
This is a wonderful book that is both entertaining and inspiring while staying "real". This is definitely not your typical "self-help" book. It makes you no life-altering promises, which he tells you was his intent. It's simply a beautiful story of one man's journey toward his dream and how he kept God at the center of everything. I highly recommend this read.
If you like to read and learn from someone else’s life journey, learn from others’ successes and failures then Between Heaven & Hollywood by David A. R. White is a book you should add to your library. If you have a dream you have yet to live then this is definitely a book for you. The sub-title is Chasing Your God-Given Dream.
If you have heard of Pure Flix Entertainment and enjoyed and been moved by the God’s Not Dead movies (if you haven’t seen these I highly recommend them as well) you will recognize Pastor Dave and I expect will enjoy reading about where he came from, how he made it to Hollywood (probably not an example all will want to follow), and how he has ‘made it’ after reaching Hollywood. It is another ‘years in the making’ overnight success story. It may inspire you to pursue and realize your God-given dreams or you may be forced to accept one of the five reasons you may never realize your God-given dream.
After reading this book you will want to go back and watch some of his previous work. Even if you don’t “know” him he has that look of familiarity that makes you wonder, “Where have I seen him before?” Maybe it was on TV in Evening Shade in the early 1990’s with Burt Reynolds or in one of his other movies such as Revelation Road. In any case, you will be entertained and learn something from this book and that is what I look for in the books I choose to read. It met those goals for me.
A few of lessons from the book:
1) Why you should not have a Plan B and what to do when your Plan A doesn’t work.
2) Look at any calendar and you will notice that 'someday' is not a day at all.
3) Your dream is your ministry. The thing that burns in your heart and keeps you up at night is God's calling on you.
4) Why some never achieve their God-given dream
A few of my favorite quotes from the book:
“I always say you should try to push yourself to be comfortable in the uncomfortable.”
“A moral compass without the principles of God's word is useless and ineffective.”
“Oftentimes we Christians believe we are entitled to a lifetime of undefeated seasons.”
“Never let success go to your head. Never let failure go to your heart.”
How did the son of a Mennonite Minster from Kansas become a successful Hollywood actor and director? See the role rock picking, garden weeding, wheat farming, Rocky III, Barney the Dinosaur, the school librarian, Walter Payton, and Burt Reynolds played in David’s journey. They are all there. It’s all inside and ready for you to discover.
