Experience the moments that made Christian music history
For decades, Steven Curtis Chapman's music and message have brought hope and inspiration to millions. Now, for the first time, Steven openly shares the experiences that have shaped him, his faith, his family, and his music in a life that has included incredible highs and faith-shaking lows.
From childhood, music has been both a refuge and a release for Steven. With humor and humility, he offers a backstage look at his early days on the road and his wild ride to the top of the charts. Discover the stories behind some of his best-loved songs. Walk with him as he and his wife, Mary Beth, navigate the joys and trials of marriage and family. Cheer for his return to the stage after doubting he could ever sing again. And SEE God in the aftermath of the tragic death of their five-year-old daughter Maria.
Poignant, gut-wrenchingly honest, yet always hopeful, Steven offers no sugary solutions to life's toughest questions. Yet out of the brokenness, he continues to trust God to one day fix what is unfixable in the space between heaven and the real world.|Steven Curtis Chapman is a Christian music icon with over 11 million records sold, 58 Dove Awards, 5 Grammys, an American Music Award, and 48 career #1 radio singles. This book is like sitting down with and old friend and listening to him tell his life story. A story of hurt, healing, redemption and most of all hope. I highly recommend it.
His autobiography reveals how: the life and the music are melded together. SCC has always been one of my favorite Christian artists, but I can say for sure he is my favorite now. With the same honesty as he sings, he has written about the highs and lows of his life, best and worst of marriage, and the spiritual journey we all undertake. I've not read the simple honesty Chapman writes with in a long time, if ever. By reading his book, I've come to see how honest his music is, and revealing of he and his wife's private life.
If you've never listened much (or at all) to his music before, don't let that be a deterrent to you. The story is amazing (and still being written). You'll laugh, cry (a lot when he writes of their daughter Maria's death), and see yourself in he and Mary Beth's story. More than everything else, you'll see God revealed through all of it, and realize your journey isn't much different than Chapman's, you just didn't sing about it for the past thirty years.
Now, if I can just personally meet him, before heaven...
Near the end of the book, Chapman talks about finally hearing the audible voice of God. He heard one word. It was enough. Packed into that word was a long paragraph, and certainty, and love. It resonated with me because in a completely different circumstance, I heard one word and knew that one word was enough. It was all the answer I needed.
I hope Steven Curtis Chapman can receive this in his life: His songs have allowed God to speak through them, to me and to countless others who have played the CDs and mp3s in the darkness of our lives, our living rooms, our cars on the highway, and in the moments where we're bopping along in the light and doing the happy dance that no one should ever see because it's so uncoordinated and jerky. I'm so glad to have read his story.
Safe to think gift-book with this one for Christian friends or family.
