I had expected more insights into the game itself but didn't feel that I got that. Instead, the book provided a fast paced, easy and somewhat predictable read that kept my attention. With all due respect to Levy, who is intelligent, articulate, and appears to be a great guy on top of that, this might be characterized by some as being at the Young Adult level. Nevertheless, it won't take long to read and should be of interest to most NFL fans.
If you have found your way to this review page, you probably already know the premise of this book. I will spare you any regurgitated synopsis.
The reader of this book will be privy to professional football's complex inner circle via a fictional twist. Throughout the book we are treated to interesting and relatable characters. If you have followed Marv Levy's career you probably will be able to recognize whom the fictional characters are based upon. Though, I could not tell whom Coach Randy Dolbermeier was based on . . . is Mr. Levy protecting the guilty? I found myself wondering how Mr. Levy must have enjoyed taking literary license dispensing character names, such as; driver extraordinaire, Zig Zag Zizzo, L.A. Leopards Quarterback, Q.T. Pye, and L.A. Leopard's owner Cedric B. Medill.
As you delve further into the story line, it becomes apparent that the book deals with an age-old philosophical principle, ethics. The core characters are dealing with a heavy burden, cheating and scandal in the high stakes business of professional sports. The interweaving of professional football (Super bowl teams) and ethics is brilliantly played out in this book. Like any good story, this underlying dilemma makes you analyze your own priorities, what would you do if you were in the protagonist position? It is quite obvious what position Mr. Levy would take. Between the Lies. What Else Would You Rather Read!
