Fernandez weaves an intricate story of love, seduction, choices, and how one deals with the choices one has made. It is a story of hope, forgiveness, and redemption. With Rachel, Fernandez has created a character who is real and complicated. She is torn between her faith as an Adventist and her desire to be free to do as she wishes. Torn between her fiance and the world they can build together and her desire for unbridled passion. Rachel represents the woman of today. Women who want it all - the job, the family, and passion.
I would give this novel a five star except for two reasons:
1) it needed a bit more editing - there are some grammar mistakes that should have been easy to spot, but only a few minor ones, nothing that would detract from the story as a whole.
2) Ethan's POV - I am not sure why Fernandez switched POVs in the story by introducing Ethan's thoughts. The story was fine without them. It is Rachel's story, after all. Still, this is but a minor distraction, although a distraction.
Rating - 4.5 stars
Note: I was given a free copy of this novel for an honest and fair review.
Young and old, married or just dating, it is an all too common phenomena for partners to drift apart, often leading to a secret affair. But the story is seldom told from the cheater’s point of view. In most novels of such nature, that privilege usually goes to the innocent victim. And the unfaithful partner rarely must suffer through Rachel’s ultimate dilemma.
The wonderful thing about "In Between" is the sincerity with which Fernandez narrates this tale in her very first published novel. As Rachel struggles to decide with whom she will spend the rest of her life, she leads the reader through many vivid emotional scenes.
"In Between" conveys a fundamental message about love, relationships, and respect for others. Everyone has the freedom to choose their life path but must also be aware of the consequences. This story emphasizes the distinction between right and wrong, recognizing the characteristics of true love, and following the heart.
I make it a practice in my reviews never to give away the plot, so I will only say that in spite of the emotional roller-coaster Rachel experiences, all the pieces eventually do fall into place. "In Between" would make a perfect movie for the Hallmark Channel on TV and the story could easily be adapted because M.A. Fernandez’s writing style includes a lot of realistic dialogue and a contemporary drama-filled plot. I am already looking forward to enjoying Ms. Fernandez’ next story.
