I am a social worker who thinks this book would be helpful in family therapy when working with mothers and sons, but it's also a great tool for mothers who are looking for a way to deepen their relationship with their child. What I like most about it is the way she has sections that push the journal writers to show that they've read and understood what the other person wrote in previous entries. For instance, it prompts a son to write about three of his most amazing accomplishments and then, on the next page, the mom writes about what she thinks about those accomplishments. It's a wonderful opportunity to do some deep active listening. I also pumped my fist in the air when I saw that Ms. Clemons asks moms to write about what their lives were like when they were their son's age. What a great way to get sons to think of their moms as whole people, who existed long before we started changing their nappies. The author starts the book out right with a heartfelt forward that captures the passion she feels for storycatching. As Ms. Clemons writes, "these stories will always connect the two of you and capture this sacred time in your lives." What a gift!

I am a homeschooling parent who tries to work journaling into our studies at least once per week. Last school year, we did the traditional composition books with space for a picture at the top. However, that became very monotonous so I was on the search for something more fun, engaging, and ever changing for this year. I hit the nail on the head with this! I loved that it made journaling a give and take between my son and I, and when I asked him what he thought he was really excited about it. We're over 12 weeks in now, and it has most certainly lived up to both of our expectations. At the beginning of the book, you choose how you want to go about it and who can read it. We kept ours top secret between just the two of us, and that makes it even cooler. It's like passing notes with a friend at school. We're always thrilled to see what the other has to say. It's fun! I hope he looks back on it one day and sees how much I love him and worked to make his education and our communication with one another so special.

This is a pretty great memory-maker between a mother and her young son. I would emphasize the "young" part, this is probably best for kids in the 8 to 11 age, before puberty really starts to hit. With that caveat, this journal is a lot of fun to pass back and forth. The writing prompts in the book are simply illustrated but wonderfully arranged, giving a "blank space" to write (and draw!) whatever one desires. The book also presents opportunities for the parent and child to gently "rib" each other without being mean about it, like the question "What won't my son have time to do in 30 years?" or "Mom, when did you get a cell phone?" Get the journal and fill it out, as it will get only more valuable over time.

I am so impressed with this book. In effort to keep my son writing over summer break I ordered this book. I had no idea the creativity and insight that I would learn about my son. We have had so much fun journaling back and forth. I highly recommend this book for any mother and son.

Our Most Difficult Bonding: Mother - Child

"Around this time last year I was having the most difficult time in my relationship with my oldest son.

To say we were in crisis would be accurately describing it.

I had tried all the ways I knew how to motivate him to do what I thought was best and had failed.

Yeah, did you catch that?

Our interactions became so stressful. He was frustrated and I was unyielding.
I didn't know what else to do (punishment, positive motivation, prayer).

Have you been there?

A dear friend rescued me.

Aware that I was going through this, she showed up on my doorsteps, un-announced, during one of my desperate attempts to fix it all, one day.

I am so grateful I have beautiful amazing friends to grow wise with, as we wing this Mom gig together. Cherish those friends in your lives, be that friend, dear Moms!

Her visit was a turning point for me (because I don't wanna call it an intervention).

I realized my son's love language is what I needed to KNOW and LIVE OUT if I wanted to reach him. Yes, I heard it straight from him.

Knowing this and taking action has been transformative. [read some of my other Connecting With Your Child posts for more on this.]

Then just last month, I found something that perfectly fits his love language.
The Between Mom & Me - Mother Son Journal.

I've known that my son always saves every little note I write to him.
He hangs on to every heart shaped post-it that I stick on his laptop screen.

But I was not prepared for this.

I read through the journal and decided to introduce it to him and start using it this week.

I am using this book to journal with my 10 year old son and we are really loving that extra bonding. We both love the prompts that give us an idea of what to write about and it feels so very special. I love that this would serve as a memory keeper for him and I when he is older.
Sometimes it is a lot easier to think more deeply while you are writing than it is when you are talking.

The book author also has a lot of suggestions on ways to personalize the journal even further.
When we are each done writing in it then we place it right next to the others bed side table. It makes for a cute little surprise as you are going to bed.
