Between the Shades of Light and Dark is a young adult romantic suspense book. The heroine of the story is the youngest citizen of a very small town where her mother relocated after divorcing her military father. She is bored and lonely. Upon the arrival of a young drifter who takes work at the general store in town, a young romance starts to blossom. When a wealthy and greedy man moves into town, things start to change. I don't write spoilers, but this book will have you on the edge of your seat as you try to figure out exactly what happened and who did it. This is a must read with a surprise revelation.
Kathleen Lopez does a great job creating the peaceful atmosphere of Columbus Cove—I’d love to visit! Plus, Samantha is a realistic and likable heroine. Channing is hot and sexy—the boyfriend any girl would want. And Samantha’s mother, a newspaper report in Columbus Cove, is a well-drawn, interesting character, as well. And of course, the villain, Steve Harrigan, a rich businessman bent on developing the little town (and ruining it), is as despicable as expected.
Lopez creates a lot of slow-boiling tension after the murder—there’s a lot of finger-pointing, but she also does a terrific job revealing only little clues at a time. The twists are fun and the plot is overall unpredictable. It was a real page-turner. I cannot wait to see more from this author.
The local rich guy is selfish, obnoxious, and always "above the law." He opens a tavern in town and trouble starts because of all the out-of-towners who patronize the establishment. One night, Channing remembers an elderly ladies' group will be letting out and having to walk past the bar. He arrives just in time to stop the harassment of two of the ladies by bar patrons but is still riled up. He heads inside to confront the rich guy and ends up escorted out by one of the bouncers. The bouncer takes it upon himself to teach Channing a lesson, and Channing ends up in the hospital for a few days. This is what sets off the intrigue part of the story because it's just after Channing gets home that a murder occurs. (From there, you need to read the book to see what happens.)
Perfectly believable characters and a great plot with a nice twist and a surprising ending. Don't expect a novel with the big hook on page one, there's a good, honest setup with great character development and a very satisfying story.
About two young lovers in a quiet town where a rich villain turns an old store into a bar, attracting hooligans into the town. The trouble begins there and escalates. No spoilers. And wait until you see the big tie-in at the end. I recommend it!
Samantha was the youngest person in a small sleepy town. Her mom is a reporter and moved them there after she divorced her military husband. This story had romance and mystery. The characters were rich and a page turner.
I received this book for an honest review and will be looking for more books by this author.
