Between the shadow and the flame takes you on a literary journey powered by intellectual thought in a vehicle of fiction which keeps you wanting more.

Between the shadow and the flame is 'Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance' with a side car and one bad ass engine.

Mr. Hodge masterfully uses his gift for storytelling to take you on an incredible journey where you almost unwittingly learn some amazing things along the way.

I approached the book with some initial trepidation. I was not sure what I was getting into. My hobby like interest in philosophy and religion gave me the courage to crack the cover and I was immediately drawn in. Sophia's story compelled me to keep reading while the dialog between the characters was the perfect stage for the presenting of information in a highly digestible and enjoyable form. Geoff's obvious mastery of and infectious passion for his topics made the learning easy. The story telling at times is almost too good because I was eager to find out what happens to the characters I actually came to care about. If you are a core philosopher or just interested, like me, I can highly recommend this book for both it's story and it's intellectual content. Thank you Mr. Hodge.

This is really two reviews, as the book has two distinct but integrated aspects. The first is a well written story about the collapse of civilization and the journey of three companions to find the truth about what has happened. The second is a synopsis of religion, philosophy and science over the years and the influence each subject has had on the development, rise and decline of the others. This second part could have, based on the quantity and quality of the information provided, turned this novel into more of text book, but the writing and context transform the academic content into an approachable novel even for someone who isn't terribly interested in these subjects. Although, some amount of intellectual curiosity will help the reader appreciate the synthesis and development of ideas delivered as a post-apocalyptic adventure.

First the story...

I think the biggest strength of this section of the book is the writing of the dialog. It flows in a natural way and each character has a consistent "voice" that helps them uniquely develop as we read the story.

While there is a mystery at the heart of the story, I wouldn't call it a mystery novel. However, as the main characters move through the plot, the author reveals information to help the reader "solve the mystery" at a good pace. Geoff never reveals too much too early nor gives you all the information at the end.

I as I read this book, I cared about what happened to the characters, and I wanted to know how things would turn out for them. This is, at least for me, the most important aspect of a book and is what draws me through the story.

Second, the philosophy...

Sounds like an unlikely premise, right? An extended dialogue about the history and interaction of philosophy, religion, art, and science set in a post-apocalyptic road trip adventure?

That’s certainly what I thought as the novel unfolds in the aftermath of a nuclear war, with characters who are in survival mode and who undertake a journey to find out what happened to the world and what is left to use to start over and forge a new beginning. I thought that if I had just been rescued from a disaster and there were death squads roaming the countryside, I might not be thinking about Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle.

Take my advice: accept the premise and let the author run with it. The unlikely juxtaposition of dialogue and plot becomes a well-crafted interplay between humanity’s history of ideas and a glimpse into the way those ideas form the reality-creating machinery of power, belief, and hope.

Whether you have a little or a lot of background in the concepts covered, you’ll be impressed with the way that the author puts the ideas in context and uses dialogue to ask just the right questions to help you understand the most difficult areas.

This is a great book and an eye-opener from start to finish.
