From the Author
This was a tremendously fun novella for me to write. The pacing, the characters, the reveals, all of it was everything I had hoped for. Sometimes as a writer you set out to create something, with a definite vision in mind for what it should look and feel like. Then you get halfway through the job, take a quick look, and say, "Oh, Lord...what did I do here?"
Not so with this little story. I can confidently say this story did everything I wanted it to and then some. We got to see a pre-Stormlord Ser Cavulus, examine the regional politics of the world a little bit, have a rip-roaring good siege of a fanatic's fortress and make a startling discovery of what lies beneath Mount Gamour. And through it all, I was able to use mostly-established characters and peel back the veneer of the White Blades just enough to suggest that there might be something amiss in paradise.
Telling the story from Dan'Moread's and, to a lesser extent, Rimidalv's perspectives was challenging but a lot of fun. It's a neat turnabout, seeing swords as the 'wielders' rather than the 'weapons,' and I hope I was able to present it in a way that a reader can enjoy without experiencing too many disconnects.
All in all, this was just a whale of a lot of fun to write, and if you have even a quarter as much fun reading it as I did writing it, you'll be glad you did.
