Taylor Lewis is a young woman with career goals. She is working hard to get ahead and believes she is on the verge of getting a big promotion when her boss decides to hire someone else with more experience. Reid Mariano is the person with more knowledge and hands-on experience. He moves to Buffalo to advance a relationship with a woman he met online.
I like the two main characters. It is interesting that Taylor, while considerably younger is the more mature of the two. I easily relate to her drive and ambition to advance. I also connect to the disappointment of being passed over for a position that I badly wanted and then being tasked to train the person who gets the job. I wish I could be as generous when I was in the same position.
Surprisingly, I like Reid. Normally I don’t when the main character isn’t honest. I believe, for me, it is because Reid is never committed to Jennifer and has doubts about his decisions from the beginning. Reid’s frustration with his bachelor status, his mother’s nagging, and his genuine feelings for Taylor save him…for me anyway.
I am slightly disappointed in the book shortly before Reid’s trip to Chicago and his conversation with Casey. He mishandles the situation and moves too slowly to make things right. Dragging his feet also drags the story. For me, this would be a solid five stars if Reid shows he has a backbone. The “climatic event” is a little anticlimactic and very typical. It is then followed by a quick end to Reid and Taylor’s story. I expected something more.
In general, Between You & I is a realistic depiction of frustration. A man frustrated that he is running out of time in his search for a stable relationship. He feels time slipping away and neither his career or his personal life is moving in the direction he truly wants. Also, we see a young woman who does everything she believes is needed to advance her career and has a hard time understanding that she isn’t ready. There is cheating, but I never felt the cheating couple is honest with one another, so it didn’t turn me off like it usually does. I hope Ms. Cairns has plans to create stories for some of the other characters—Casey, Miranda, and Jordan can use a book. Before You & I is a enjoyable, fast-paced story. I recommend it!

This is the first story I've read by Susan Cairns and I'm definitely going to be looking at her other works. Her writing is flawless and she did such an amazing job with her descriptions of Taylor and Reid. I was able to instantly connect with them both because I could really feel what their characters were saying.
I've gotten to where I really enjoy stories when one of the characters is a little older too, thus adding a little more maturity to the storyline. I especially liked Taylor. I hated she was overlooked for the promotion and couldn't wait to see what happened between her and Reid once they were put together. I could literally feel something between them.
I can't say enough how much I thoroughly enjoyed Between You and I and I seriously didn't want to put it down once I started it. I'm definitely going to be recommending it.
This talented author had me hooked and intrigued from the very beginning, and I look forward to reading more of her work in the future.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book!
