"McLaughlin and Kraus explore the dark side of fame...and provide an empathetic backstory to the sorts of salacious tales that readers see in the tabloids." —Publishers Weekly

“Pop culture aficionados will see plenty of parallels to Britney Spears’ meteoric rise and downward
spiral in Kelsey’s story, and they’ll enjoy McLaughlin and Kraus’ unflinching look at the price of fame." —Booklist

Between You and Me by Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus follows the career of Kelsey Wade through the narration of her cousin, Logan. Logan hasn't had contact with Kelsey for years and suddenly is flown out to be with Kelsey and instantly becomes her assistant. Kelsey is loosely modeled after Britney Spears - the meteoric rise to fame, dysfunctional family, controlling parents, and spectacular meltdown and fall from grace.

Between you and me, Between You and Me was all over the place and not much was good. The writing is good. McLaughlin and Kraus are good writers technically. The story itself jumped over facts and transitions that would have made the plot more credible. Why, after being estranged from her cousin and her aunt and uncle for years, would Logan, who supposedly has a MBA, drop everything to become her assistant. Why would she tolerate the treatment Michelle and Andy, her aunt and uncle, dished out to her. They are both domineering control freaks.

The bottom line is that I didn't like or connect with any of the characters and Logan's behavior, in most ways, actively annoyed me. It also reminded me why I need to stay away from chick lit. Setting the lack of morals and inability to set healthy boundaries aside, Logan's promiscuous behavior is dangerous today.

But I did keep reading to discover what the big secret was that caused the original estrangement between Logan and Kelsey's family. Once I had that answer, truthfully I no longer cared, beyond wondering, which I had been doing long before the big reveal, why Andy was even allowed in her life. And why the media hadn't released that story years before.

Living your life in the spotlight to everyone on the outside always looks glamorous. To the person in the ring of fire it is anything but a nightmare waiting to happen. Kelsey feels old at the age of 25 since her life career began as a child. Her parents control her, the handlers manipulate her, and the true friends are non-existent.

When Kelsey is reunited with Logan, a long estranged cousin the life that was barely hanging on by a thread snaps. Logan becomes her personal assistant trying to maintain Kelsey's professional life and get her some personal space. Logan thinks the solutions to Kelsey's problem are love, less work would help out, and letting Kelsey live her own life. Yet no one is going to let that happen, as the money train needs to keep moving to fulfill the dreams everyone is living through Kelsey.

As the story unfolds and the dark secrets of the past are revealed the small tears become rips and there is no forgiving life altering mistakes.

The journey that you are taken on by Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus is so realistically detailed you get the sense of standing in the room as a witness not a reader. You want to yell at all the people destroying this life in order to make their own better and at times, the tears are running down your cheeks as well as Kelsey's.

I'm really disappointed by this book. I was looking for a light, fun read and decided to get this book since a review on the front cover called it a great beach read. I found the storyline convoluted and lacking in substance. I really expected more since I LOVED "The Nanny Diaries" also by the same authors. I have no idea why the title was selected and they touched on a very serious mental condition, but chose not to dive in leaving me confused about why they even went that route.
Will continue to look for reads by these authors. I just hope the next one is better.

I think a lot of these reviewers are missing he point. this book was written to address a serious illness -- bipolar disorder.

I've never read the nanny diaries nor do I care to. but the summary of this book intrigued me and it's what made me pick it up.

the main character in this book is a popular singer who liver her life in the public from a young age with her parents controlling her every move. her cousin comes in after a long time of being out of touch to help her through her career, yet there was a past incident involving the family that she just can't out her finger on and no one will help her remember it.

long story short, this book addresses the realness of bipolar disorder. it is a serious mental illness that many people suffer and unfortunately many people do not acknowledge the severity of it if it is not treated.

for those of you that have watched Britney Spears since the 2000s through today, there are many comparisons between her life and the main character, Kelsey.

would I recommend this book? yes. is it a light read? yes & no. it deals with a serious illness but the read itself is quick and keeps you wanting to know what happened to cousin Logan.

I enjoyed this book and a lot is for the fact that the authors tries to address a serious mental illness that is not talked of enough or understood. I applaud them for trying to bring more insight into it.
